  • Patent number: 8635852
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating an engine including an exhaust treatment system coupled to an engine exhaust, the exhaust treatment system further coupled to an engine intake via an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. One example method comprises, operating in a first mode including routing exhaust gas through the exhaust treatment system to an exhaust tailpipe; operating in a second mode including routing exhaust gas through the exhaust treatment system to an engine intake via the EGR system, and operating in a third mode including routing exhaust gas to an engine intake through the EGR system while bypassing the exhaust treatment system.

Inventors: Jason Aaron Lupescu, James Michael Kerns, Michael James Uhrich, Ken O. Jahr
  • Patent number: 8464524
Abstract: A system for trapping liquid exhaust during a cold start of an internal combustion engine is provided. As one example, a system includes, an exhaust inlet, an exchange area fluidly coupled downstream of said exhaust inlet, a trap coupled to said exchange area having a liquid exhaust chamber for collection of liquid exhaust, and a catalytic converter fluidly coupled downstream to said exchange area. In another example, a method includes condensing, at least partly, exhaust from the engine in an exchange area in an exhaust system into liquid exhaust, collecting liquid exhaust into a trap disposed in the exchange area, and evaporating the liquid exhaust into the exchange area after an evaporation temperature is reached in the trap.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 6, 2008
Date of Patent: June 18, 2013
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: David Karl Bidner, John M. Roth, Ken O. Jahr, Gopichandra Surnilla, James Michael Kerns, Timothy Joseph Clark
  • Patent number: 8161732
Abstract: A system and method for improving emissions of an engine capable of combusting a multi-component fuel comprised of two or more fuels is presented. According to the method, the passage exhaust gases are processed in said exhaust system is determined in part from the concentration of one component fuel.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 5, 2008
Date of Patent: April 24, 2012
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Mark William Peters, John M. Roth, Ken O. Jahr, Jason Eugene Devries, John Hedges

  • Patent number: 6318318
Abstract: A rocker arm assembly 207 is provided which has an extendable plunger 212. The plunger 212 has a spring 136 biased first position contacting with a lost motion arm 44. In the first position, the plunger 212 prevents angular movement of the lost motion arm 44 with respect to a rocker arm body 208. In the first position, the rocker arm assembly 207 imparts full motion to a valve 19. A coil 224 is provided to bias the plunger 212 to a second position. In the second position, the plunger 212 does not contact the lost motion arm 44 and accordingly the lost motion arm 44 can have relative movement. When the lost motion arm 44 can have relative angular movement, the valve 19 is partially or totally deactivated.
