Patent number: 8670350Abstract: A Bluetooth-enabled computing device includes a user interface for displaying a prompt to specify a descriptive identifier for a network device prior to performance of a Bluetooth Device Discovery Routine, the descriptive identifier being different from Bluetooth Device Discovery Routine Identifiers. A system memory has entries including descriptive identifiers, each descriptive identifier corresponding to a network device pre-configured with a connection profile. A connection manager determines if a specified descriptive identifier is a match to any entry in the system memory and to implements a connection to a network device corresponding to a matching entry. Otherwise the connection manager performs a discovery routine to locate and establish a connection to at least one available network device corresponding to the specified descriptive identifier.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2011Date of Patent: March 11, 2014Assignee: PALM, Inc.Inventors: Kenin Page, Elwin Hunt

Patent number: 8346938Abstract: A method for storing information in a database pertaining to which wireless devices an application initiates and accepts communications from. The information from the database is utilized whenever an application attempts to establish a connection with an unconnected device. The method includes analyzing an application's purpose in requesting to open a wireless communication port. If the purpose is to initiate communications with a peripheral device, the method queries the database and then initiates a communication link with the appropriate device. If the purpose is to accept communications from a peripheral device, the method detects incoming wireless device signals and identifies their source. If the source is listed in the database as an accepted device for the application, a communication link will be established. If the device is not listed, the method will revert back to detecting incoming wireless device signals.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2002Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Scott Allen Caddes, Kenin Page

Patent number: 7325048Abstract: A method for automatically creating a modem interface on a computer device for use with a wireless device. The method of the present invention creates a modem interface without requiring the user to execute a standard operating system's manual modem installation procedure. The modem interface can then be used as a standard interface to a wireless device. This allows existing software to be used in conjunction with the wireless device connected to the modem interface.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2002Date of Patent: January 29, 2008Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Chad Milito, Mark Price, R. Patent number: 7324462Abstract: An improved method for wireless device discovery that enables a user to select devices by a descriptive identifier rather than a unique alphanumeric identifier. In addition, the method allows for certain wireless devices to be pre-configured for connection such that if they are requested, the method automatically connects the requesting device with the selected device.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2002Date of Patent: January 29, 2008Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Kenin Page, Elwin Hunt

Patent number: 6779047Abstract: Within one embodiment of the present invention, arbitration software operating on a computer is able to determine whether communication software utilizes the same serial communication (COM) port of the computer as a HotSync Manager. If they do use the same serial COM port, the present embodiment arbitration software shuts down the HotSync Manager, if its running, thereby enabling the serial COM port to be utilized for other purposes (e.g., wireless modem communication). However, if the present embodiment arbitration software detects a HotSync Request received via the serial COM port, it runs the HotSync Manager enabling a HotSync process to occur between (for example) a personal digital assistant (PDA) and the computer. Once the present embodiment arbitration software detects the completion of the HotSync process, it shuts down the HotSync Manager until it detects the next HotSync Request.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2001Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Scott Caddes, Stuart Louis Timm, Kenin Page, Randy C. Patent number: 6760804Abstract: An apparatus and method for interfacing legacy applications with a wireless communication network. Specifically, the present invention discloses an integrated hardware device that creates and manages a virtual serial communication port. The virtual port is presented to legacy applications and an operating system in a computer system as a serial communication port having a UART device. An interface application ensures legacy application compatibility with the wireless communication standard, including a Bluetooth communication standard. The interface application converts outgoing data from the legacy application into a format associated with the Bluetooth communication standard. The interface application converts incoming data from a format compatible with the wireless communication standard to a format compatible with a bus and the legacy application located on the computer system.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Elwin G.
