  • Patent number: 4071001
Abstract: A stratified combustion engine provided with a prechamber having no inlet valve associated therewith, wherein the precombustion chamber comprises a first chamber communicating with a main combustion chamber, a second chamber communicating with the first chamber only through an orifice, and a discharge electrode disposed in the orifice. In the suction stroke, a lean fuel-air mixture is charged into the main combustion chamber, while a stream of a rich fuel-air mixture, which is deflected in the direction of flow by impinging against the back face of an inlet valve, is introduced into the first chamber from the main combustion chamber through a communication passage, so that the so-called stratified charge can be achieved. In the compression stroke, the rich fuel-air mixture is charged from the first chamber into the second chamber through the orifice.

  • Patent number: 4027635
Abstract: A flow rate control mechanism for use in controlling the flow rate of exhaust gases in an exhaust gas re-circulating system of an internal combustion engine. This mechanism includes a swirl flow chamber having a circular cross section, a first nozzle and a second nozzle, the former of which is open through the inner wall of the swirl flow chamber therein in the direction normal thereto and the latter of which is open through inner wall of the swirl flow chamber therein in the direction tangential thereto. The latter nozzle is positioned close to the opening of the former or first nozzle. The first nozzle directed in the normal direction extracts part of exhaust gases through an exhaust manifold, while the second nozzle directed in the tangential direction is communicated with atmosphere. The opening of the first nozzle is close to the opening of the second nozzle, so that the pressure at the opening of the first nozzle approximates the atmospheric pressure.

  • Patent number: 3974861
Abstract: An improved air flow direction control valve particularly adapted for use with an exhaust gas purifying system on an internal combustion engine to control the direction of flow of air to be mixed into exhaust gas for effecting additional combustion of the uncombusted constituents therein. The valve essentially comprises a pair of valve members selectively operable to open one of two main outlets and a diaphragm operated shaft for selectively operating the two valve members upon movement between a first and a second position. The shaft is formed with a pair of shoulders which define a reduced diameter shaft portion therebetween, and the two valve members encircle the reduced diameter shaft portion in an oppositely facing relation.

  • Patent number: 3957444
Abstract: In the device disclosed, a catalytic converter purifies exhaust gas from an engine. A sensor measures the temperature of the converter and an amplifier amplifies the measurement to produce a temperature signal. A differentiator produces a time-differential of the signal multiplied by a constant representing the time constant of the sensor. An operating circuit adds the multiplied time-differential to the signal to produce a voltage that is compensated for the response delay of the temperature sensor. Electromagnetic relays respond to the voltage by diverting the gases and the secondary air around the converter.
