Thus, the operation of the occupant restraint device is precisely controlled without being adversely affected by noise.

    Abstract: A control system is provided for an occupant protection apparatus including one or more air bags. The control system is capable of avoiding an increase in manufacturing costs by minimizing the number of components and by utilizing a common circuit portion in a pair of activation circuits, while maintaining a rated current substantially equal to that of completely separate activation circuits. If a collision of a vehicle occurs, first and second activation circuits are activated based on an integrated value &Dgr;V of a deceleration measured with the G-sensor. If an activation time period of the second activation circuit happens to overlap with an activation time period of the first activation circuit, a control unit activates the second activation circuit upon completion of the activation of the first activation circuit. Therefore, the number of components of the control system can be reduced.

The central control unit carries out the communication with slave units (1, 2) detecting the informations of high priority at intervals of a predetermined cycle T0 and also carries out the communication with slave units (3, 4) detecting other informations of low priority in sequence at intervals of the predetermined cycle T0. Consequently, without changing the communication method with the plural terminal units before and after the vehicle's collision, the device can collect the informations of high priority at short intervals and the informations of low priority at long intervals.

When a pre-crush brake G sensor 12 detects a driver's pre-crush braking operation, it is executed to pick up a passenger's sitting position that a passenger's position detecting device 3 has been detecting and estimate the passenger's position at the start of inflating the air bag on the basis of the passenger's sitting position and a passenger's displacement. The passenger's displacement is obtained by double time integrating an acceleration detected by a collision detecting sensor 11 with respect to a degree of impact due to the vehicle's collision.

The header assembly (15) consists of roughly flat grounding contacts (13) having a fork-shaped receptacle (13a). When the above assemblies are joined together, the receptacle contacts the grounding plates which are passed through the openings of the plug assembly. Since both the grounding plates and the grounding contacts are of a roughly flat configuration, their production is simple.
