  • Publication number: 20020035886
Abstract: A bicycle shift control device includes a takeup element for pulling and releasing a shift control element, a first finger contact member, a second finger contact member, and an interconnecting member that rotates around a rotational axis. The interconnecting member interconnects the first finger contact member and the second finger contacting member so that the first finger contact member and the second finger contact member move in a same direction relative to the rotational axis. The first finger contact member has a first finger contact surface disposed on a first side of a plane, wherein the first finger contact member moves toward the plane when the takeup element moves in a pulling direction. • Patent number: 6334514
Abstract: A bicycle disc brake is provided in which a support member movably couples the brake caliper to the frame of the bicycle. The bicycle disc brake caliper has a caliper housing with a single piston unit. The piston unit is movably coupled to the housing between a release position, in which the piston unit is spaced from a disc brake mounted to a wheel of a bicycle, and a braking position, in which the piston unit engages the disc brake of the bicycle wheel. The piston unit has a first friction member movably coupled between a release position and a braking position and a second friction member arranged substantially parallel to the first friction member to form a disc brake receiving space between the first and second friction members. In one embodiment, the caliper housing is movably coupled to the support member by a pivot pin. In another embodiment, the caliper housing is movably coupled to the support member by a linkage assembly.

  • Patent number: 6276227
Abstract: A clamping apparatus for a shifting control device includes a clamping unit and a housing attached to the clamping unit. The clamping unit includes a clamp member structured to mount to a handlebar around a first axis coaxial with the handlebar, a clamp arm member coupled to the clamp member and extending in a radial direction from the clamping member, and a housing mounting member disposed on the clamp arm member and spaced apart from the clamp member. The housing includes a base member structured to mount to the handlebar around the first axis, a housing arm member coupled to the base member and extending in the direction of the clamp arm member, and a pulley coupling member disposed on the housing arm member and spaced apart from the base member, wherein the pulley coupling member is fixed to the housing mounting member. A pulley is coupled to the pulley coupling member for rotation around a second axis that usually is oriented differently from the first axis.

  • Patent number: 6199446
Abstract: An indicator is provided for engaging a first control cable connected to a first bicycle shift control device and for engaging a second control cable connected to a second bicycle shift control device. The indicator includes a housing; a handlebar attachment member for attaching the housing to a handlebar; a first intermediate member; a first coupling member coupled to the first intermediate member for coupling the first intermediate member for movement with the first control cable; and a separate first indicating member viewable from outside the housing, wherein the first indicating member engages the first intermediate member so that movement of the first intermediate member causes movement of the first indicating member.

  • Patent number: 5941125
Abstract: A first shifting control device is located at a first position on the bicycle, and a second shifting control device is located at a second position on the bicycle. The first shifting control device includes a first shifting lever for causing the first shifting control device to pull and release a first transmission element, and the second shifting control device includes a second shifting lever for causing the second shifting control device to pull and release a second transmission element. An interlocking mechanism interlocks the first shifting lever and the second shifting lever so that movement of either the first shifting lever or the second shifting lever causes the bicycle shifting control apparatus to shift the bicycle transmission.

  • Patent number: 5921138
Abstract: A bicycle shifter operating device for operating a shifting mechanism via a transmission element includes a control body for mounting to a bicycle in close proximity to a handlebar for controlling a pulling and releasing of the transmission element. A first lever is mounted to the control body for movement which causes the control body to effect pulling of the transmission element, and a second lever is mounted to the control body for movement which causes the control body to effect releasing of the transmission element. One lever may be pivotally coupled to the control body, and the other lever may be coupled for linear movement relative to the control body. The lever structured for linear movement may be coupled to a transmission mechanism for operating the control body in such a way that very little linear movement is needed to operate the control body.

  • Patent number: 5768945
Abstract: A bicycle shift control device for attachment to a handlebar including a first grip extending laterally with respect to the bicycle and a second grip extending forwardly with respect to the bicycle. The device includes first and second shift levers extending from the shift control device so that the first and second shift levers are disposed in close proximity to the first grip and to the second grip when the shifting device is mounted to the bicycle. Each shift lever includes a first finger tab positioned so that the first finger tab is disposed in close proximity to the first grip when the shift control device is mounted to the bicycle, and a second finger tab positioned so that the second finger tab is disposed in close proximity to the second grip when the shift control device is mounted to the bicycle.

  • Patent number: 5618241
Abstract: A shift control device includes a movable member having a cable support for supporting the transmission cable, wherein the movable member moves as the shifting device actuates the transmission. An assist spring is provided for biasing the movable member in a direction opposite a direction of biasing of the movable member by the return spring of the transmission. The cable support supports the transmission cable such that tension exerted by the assist spring on the transmission cable remains substantially constant regardless of a position of the movable member as the shifting device actuates the transmission. In a more specific embodiment, the cable support moves the transmission cable in a straight line, and the cable support may move the transmission cable without winding the transmission cable about the cable support.
