  • Publication number: 20130209189
Abstract: A tool shank for use with a cutting insert in a rotary cutting tool includes a body having, and adapted to be rotated about, a central longitudinal tool axis, the body having a tip portion structured to receive at least a portion of the cutting insert therein. The shank also includes a pair of chip flutes formed in the body and a pair of recesses, each recess bordering a respective chip flute. Each recess includes a rim portion extending perpendicular to the tool axis and a bearing surface extending at an incline relative to the tool axis. Each rim portion is adapted to engage a corresponding surface on the cutting insert. Each bearing surface is adapted to engage a corresponding bearing surface on the cutting insert in a manner such that the cutting insert is pulled against the body when the rotary cutting tool is rotated about the tool axis.

  • Publication number: 20130183113
Abstract: A twist drill includes a drill body having a chip flute extending a distance along the drill body. The chip flute has a leading edge and a run-out edge running along the chip flute. The run-out edge is disposed behind the leading edge in a direction of rotation of the twist drill. The chip flute, viewed cross-sectionally in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, includes a first wall portion and a second wall portion. The first wall portion extends along a curve between the run-out edge and the second wall portion. The second wall portion extends in a straight line from between the leading edge and the first wall portion. The first wall portion and the second wall portion are disposed adjoining one another and together define a J-shaped cross-sectional profile perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

  • Publication number: 20130183112
Abstract: A rotary tool extends in the direction of an axis of rotation and includes a carrier having a coupling receptacle disposed at an end face, the carrier having a carrier cross section. The coupling receptacle is delimited in the entire region of the carrier cross section by an outer web having an end face forming a planar bearing area. The coupling receptacle is delimited by side walls which extend step-free from the bearing area to a bottom area and include a pair of opposing clamping segments extending in the circumferential direction and a pair of opposing torque segments arranged at an angle thereto. The tool also includes a cutting head exchangeably fastened to the carrier, the cutting head having a coupling pin disposed in the coupling receptacle. At least one of the pairs of segments is oriented inclined in relation to the axis of rotation.

  • Publication number: 20130078043
Abstract: A cutting assembly useful for the chipforming removal of material from a workpiece at the cutting insert-workpiece interface. The cutting assembly has a holder with a coolant passage and a seat. As one option, a stud extends away from the seat and facilitates coolant flow to an insert locking cap, which attaches to the stud. The insert locking cap directs coolant flow toward the cutting insert-workpiece interface. As another option, a diverter plate has a bottom surface with a bowl and an arcuate forward surface with one or more openings. Coolant flows from the coolant passage into the bowl then exits through at least one opening in the arcuate forward surface towards the cutting insert-workpiece interface.
