Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to apparatus for temperature modulation of samples. Generally, aspects of the disclosure provide for a portable cooling and heating apparatus which enables a user to visualize a sample during cooling or heating. In one embodiment, the apparatus include a sample block, a plurality of thermoelectric modules coupled to the sample block, and a cooling block coupled to the plurality of thermoelectric modules. In another embodiment, the cooling block is in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir. Other embodiments utilize various insulating materials to influence thermal conductivity between the sample block and the cooling block to provide for enhanced temperature control and modulation.
