  • Publication number: 20090139915
Abstract: A fluid filter includes a vertical housing, a filter cartridge, and a bypass valve. The housing has a fluid inlet for communicating a fluid into the housing and a fluid outlet for communicating fluid downstream of the housing. The filter cartridge is disposed within the housing between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet and includes a filter element for filtering the fluid, as well as means for maintaining and relieving a predetermined level of pressure across the filter element to provide an accurate visual indicator as to whether the filter element needs replacement. The bypass valve allows fluid to flow from an unfiltered side of the filter element to a filtered side of the filter element when the pressure across the filter element exceeds the predetermined pressure.

  • Patent number: 5084162
Abstract: A filter assembly includes a base and a filter cartridge installed on the base. The filter cartridge is retained on the base by a radially expandable, resilient, circumferentially extending snap ring which is expanded by rotation of a camming member located between contiguous ends of the snap ring. The snap ring includes a lip which engages a groove on the filter cartridge to hold the filter cartridge on the base.

  • Patent number: 5036698
Abstract: A method and apparatus for predicting the remaining service life of an air filter element reads the pressure drop across the filter element at regular usage intervals (such as engine run time or distance the vehicle has traveled). An approximation of the rate at which the pressure drop is increasing is made, which is used to calculate the usage at which the maximum pressure drop will be attained.

  • Patent number: 4197101
Abstract: An air cleaner for a heavy duty vehicle comprises a container having an open end for receiving a filter cartridge, and a removable closure for the open end. The closure includes a first portion which defines a central opening which is removably secured to the open end by circumferentially spaced bolts and a second portion comprising an air valve housing which is mounted on the first portion through a swivel connection to permit the air valve housing to pivot relative to the container without removal of the bolts. The air valve housing includes a pair of inlets connected to different air sources, such as to ambient outside air and to heated engine air respectively, and a valve mechanism which opens one of the inlets while the other is closed. Air communicating through the open inlet is communicated through the central opening into the container.
