  • Patent number: 7121523
Abstract: Particularly in an engine that has been inactive for a substantial period of time at a cold temperature, fluid forces acting on moving members, such as electronically-activated fluid control valves, may be significant until the engine warms up. A way to reduce the fluid forces and their detrimental effects is to reduce the volume of fluid which are creating the fluid forces, including venting all or some of this fluid to drain. Additionally, fluid that gathers can be drained away. In order to accomplish such venting, the present disclosure includes a fluid control valve having a body with at least one fluid passage connected to a bore, a movable member in the bore, an actuator connected to the movable member to move the movable member, and at least one vent passage opening into the bore between the fluid passage and the actuator. The disclosure may include additional drain passages to drain away gathered fluid from actuating components.

  • Publication number: 20050277970
Abstract: A surgical cutting instrument including a first elongated member, a second tubular member, a handpiece, a first hub, a second hub, and an actuator assembly. The first tubular member has cutting tip and is co-axially disposed within the second tubular member such that the cutting tip is exposed at a cutting window. The first hub is mounted to the first tubular member and is moveably coupled to the handpiece. The second hub is mounted to the second tubular member and defines a hub axis. The actuator assembly rotatably couples the second hub to the handpiece and includes an actuator. Movement of the actuator is translated to rotational movement of the second hub so as to effectuate spatial rotation of the cutting window. In this regard, the actuator movement is not co-axial with the hub axis.

  • Publication number: 20050177168
Abstract: A surgical cutting instrument including an outer tube, inner wire assembly, cutting tip, coupling chuck, and housing. The outer tube includes a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end. The inner wire assembly is received within the lumen. Preferably, the outer tube and inner wire assembly form a longitudinally curved segment. The cutting tip is connected to a distal section of the inner wire assembly. The coupling chuck is secured to a proximal section of the inner wire assembly. The housing maintains the outer tube and the coupling chuck. A rotating journal bearing, preferably a rotating-hydrodynamic bearing, is established between the inner wire assembly and the inner surface of the outer tube, allowing nominal rotational speeds of 80,000 RPM. Preferred embodiments of the surgical cutting instrument enhance surgeon visibility, minimize heat build-up, and provide improved stiffness and thermal protection.

  • Publication number: 20050159767
Abstract: An angled tissue cutting instrument includes an outer member having an elongate body with a bend and a forward end, and a distal tip rotatably mounted on the forward end. The distal tip and body are rotatable relative to one another about a central longitudinal axis of the tip to variably position a cutting window of the tip in a selected directional position about the axis. Relative rotation between the distal tip and the body about the axis is prevented to lock the cutting window in a selected directional position when the outer member is maintained in a longitudinally extended position by an inner member of the instrument disposed within the outer member. An indexing tool for the angled tissue cutting instrument has a socket for receiving the distal tip to effect rotational indexing.

  • Publication number: 20050096649
Abstract: A surgical micro-resecting instrument including an outer tubular member, an inner tubular member, a hub assembly, and an electrical insulator. The outer tubular member is formed of an electrically conductive material and defines a proximal section, a distal section, and a lumen. The distal section forms an axial passage distal a cutting window, both of which are fluidly connected to the lumen. The inner tubular member is disposed within the lumen and defines a distal portion that forms a cutting tip. The hub assembly maintains the inner and outer tubular members. The electrical insulator covers a region of the outer tubular member distal the hub assembly. In this regard, at least the cutting window is not covered by the electrical insulator for cauterizing contacted tissue via the energy. The axial passage facilitates continuous aspiration.

  • Publication number: 20050090849
Abstract: An angled tissue cutting instrument comprises an elongate angled outer tubular member and an elongate flexible inner tubular member rotatably disposed within the outer member to transmit torque to a cutting configuration of the inner member when the inner member is rotated relative to and within the outer member in forward and reverse rotational directions. The inner member comprises an inner tube, a helical cut formed along a length portion of the inner tube to impart flexibility and no more than a single layer of spiral wrap disposed over the helically cut length portion of the inner tube. A method of fabricating an angled tissue cutting instrument involves forming the helical cut in an inner tube having an inner diameter the same size as the inner diameter of the straight inner tubular member of a straight tissue cutting instrument of the same diametric size as the angled tissue cutting instrument.
