  • Patent number: 9936948
Abstract: Systems, devices and methods to improve safety and efficiency in an operating room comprise providing a suture package that holds new suture needles and needle receptacles for storing used needles. The devices can be safely worn for the surgeon to self-dispense new suture needles in the near surgical field and to secure the used needles into a needle trap or a needle retainer located on his extremity, on his operative instruments or on the surgical drapes. The device may provide automated and/or simplified needle counting both during use and after removal from the surgical field. The device may be configured for ergonomic and efficient use so as to minimize the actions and motions of the surgeon to dispense and secure the needle.

  • Publication number: 20170296358
Abstract: The strength of bone implant attached to a bone is improved by using hybrid inserts which have stems and wings having bone ingrowth surface features and caps having outer surfaces of cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The stems and wings of the hybrid inserts are inserted into living bone and the bone implant is attached to the hybrid inserts with PMMA cement. Over time, the bone grows into the bone ingrowth surface features. The bone ingrowth strengthens the bonding of the hybrid inserts and the bone implant with the bone over time. The hybrid inserts increase the shear, tensile and torque strength of the bone implants. Bone inserts that do not have ingrowth surface features loosen over time.

  • Patent number: 9782274
Abstract: A fairing can be attached to a prosthetic limb or over a brace to alter the appearance of the prosthetic limb or brace. The outer surface of the prosthetic limb can be a mirror image of an intact limb and the outer surface of the brace can have an outer surface that corresponds to an injured limb. Because the fairing fits closely around the prosthetic limb or brace, the interior surface of the fairing has a surface that corresponds to a mirror image of an intact limb or an outer surface of an injured limb.

  • Publication number: 20170119486
Abstract: A multi-layer pre-drape apparatus is applied to a patient before the patient is moved into the operating room. The multi-layer pre-drape apparatus includes a lower layer with a center aperture and an upper layer that covers the aperture. The multi-layer pre-drape apparatus can be placed on a sterilized area of the patient to maintain the cleanliness of the incision area. Alternatively, the multi-layer pre-drape apparatus can be placed on the patient and sterilization fluid can be applied to the skin of the patient through the aperture. The patient can then be moved into the operating room and the upper layer of the multi-layer pre-drape can be removed to expose the sterilized area of the patient in the aperture. Additional drapes can be added to the pre-drape apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20170100022
Abstract: The illumination system described below comprises an arthroscope, endoscope or other suitable surgical tool and an attachable cannula comprising a transparent or semi-transparent material capable of carrying light from the proximal end of the cannula to the distal end of the cannula, thereby illuminating the surgical field. The surgical field is thus illuminated through components that do not occupy space that may otherwise be used for the optics of the arthroscope. The arthroscopic illumination system further comprises one or more illumination sources disposed at the proximal end of the cannula. The illumination source may be optically coupled with the cannula at the hub or other appropriate location. The cannula comprises a sterilizable polymer which functions as a waveguide. A waveguide is a material medium that confines and guides light. When in use, the light source connected to the hub provides light which may be guided to the distal end of the cannula or any other suitable location.

  • Patent number: 9549837
Abstract: A brace has a plurality of elongated beams that extend in parallel along the length of the brace. The adjacent beams are coupled to posts that extend around the circumference of the brace in a staggered pattern and hold the beams in place around the brace. The beams and posts define a plurality of elongated fenestrations. The configuration of the beams and fenestrations allow the brace to be strong in compression and bending and also provide elastic radial expansion.

  • Patent number: 9529941
Abstract: A conformable hand brace includes a support surface for supporting palm portion of a patient's hand and an adjustable mechanism that allows the cross section of the brace to be adjusted. The brace can be adjusted to provide a close fit as the geometry of the hand changes. The inventive system allows the conformable hand brace to be designed automatically by a computer based upon anatomical measurements.
