    Abstract: A gas and liquid contact apparatus is disclosed having a vertically orientated containing vessel including a sidewall. At least one grid assembly is positioned within the containing vessel transverse to and concentric about a vertical center line of the vessel. Liquid and gas are injected into the vessel at specified flow rates whereby a fluidized zone results. Various techniques are disclosed for rotating the fluidized zone resulting from the interaction of the gas and liquid in the direction of the Coriolis rotational effect at the geographical point of use of the apparatus.

    Abstract: A mass transfer system for decontaminating a contaminated liquid or gas stream. The system includes a container with a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, a gas inlet and a gas outlet. The container is adapted to channel a liquid stream from the liquid inlet to the liquid outlet. The vessel is also adapted to channel a gas stream from the gas inlet to the gas outlet. At least one grid is mounted within the container and is positioned within the gas and liquid streams. The grid has a plurality of apertures formed therein which are adapted to disperse the gas flow as it passes through the grid. The dispersion of the gas flow generates a fluidized bed within the container. The grid is preferably parabolic in shape. A light assembly is mounted on the container and has a light emitting unit positioned so as to emit light into the container. The light irradiates at least one of the streams flowing therein.

    Abstract: A throat section of a venturi for passing a flow of fluid therethrough comprises a plurality of spaced parallel physical barriers. The physical barriers are oriented parallel to the direction of fluid flow through the throat section. The throat section is installed in a throat zone of a venturi scrubber defined by an upstream zone having an unobstructed upstream section, a throat zone having the throat section, and a downstream section. The spaces between adjacent barriers are from about 3/16 inches to about 8 inches so as to create free stream zones between adjacent barriers. Each barrier may have a selected length which decreases with distance from the axis of the throat section. A method for treating a stream of effluent fluid containing entrained particulates by introducing the effluent fluid and target droplets into the throat section so as to promote impaction therebetween is also described.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an improved mass transfer or gas-liquid contact device having a specially contoured grid member(s) interposed in the gas flow of the device. Ideally the grid member(s) has a cross-sectional profile which equals the sum of the theoretical velocity pressure profile of the gas flowing in an open vessel and the static and dynamic heads of the contacting liquid. An additional depth is added to the grid approximately 5 to 40% more, to create an energy imbalance in favor of the introduced liquid, thereby allowing it to drain. In existing vessels where it is desirable to replace prior art devices with an apparatus embodying the present invention, a plurality of grid modules may be employed, each module including a shaped grid or grid pair approximating the velocity profile of the gas stream in each.
