  • Patent number: 6232965
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synthesizing speech or facial movements to match selected speech sequences. A videotape of an arbitrary text sequence is obtained including a plurality of images of a user speaking various sequences. Video images corresponding to specific spoken phonemes are obtained. A video frame is digitized from that sequence which represents the extreme of mouth motion and shape. This is used to create a database of images of different facial positions relative to spoken phonemes and diphthongs. An audio speech sequence is then used as the element to which a video sequence will be matched. The audio sequence is analyzed to determine spoken phoneme sequences and relative timings. The database is used to obtain images for each of these phonemes and these times, and morphing techniques are used to create transitions between the images. Different parts of the images can be processed in different ways to make a more realistic speech pattern.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 15, 2001
    Assignee: California Institute of Technology

  • Patent number: 5261924
Abstract: A layered composition which includes a hardened core comprising at least about 50 weight percent permanganate which composition releases permanganate ion into an aqueous media over time is described. A method of making and using the composition of the invention also are described.

  • Patent number: 5223570
Abstract: A method for preparing graft polymer dispersions having broad particle size distribution without wildly fluctuating viscosities is disclosed. The method comprises:(a) preparing intermediate graft polyol dispersions containing 30 percent by weight or less solids to achieve a broad distribution of partial sizes in a continuous process and(b) charging the intermediate graft polymer dispersion of (a) to a semi-batch reactor as seeds for further grafting to increase the solids content of the dispersion to above 30 percent by weight. The graft polymer so formed is useful in the production of polyurethanes.

  • Patent number: 5068582
Abstract: A commutated brushless dc motor includes a detector which senses the zero crossings of the unenergized winding. A timing system includes a reference capacitor coupled to the detection unit and charged to a voltage proportional to zero crossing time. The voltage is compared to a capacitor charged from a constant current source. At a percentage level of the reference capacitor, a commutating pulse is applied to a winding commutating circuit. The incoming pulses drive a counter and actuates a programmed decoder which generates output signals for commutation of the windings and selection of the next unenergized winding. The detector is selectively connected to sense the induced voltage in the unenergized winding. To start the motor, a separate charging circuit creates initial pulses to energize the windings and accelerate the motor. At a given speed, the zero crossing circuit is enabled.

  • Patent number: 4959602
Abstract: A bridge between the inductor and the capacitor of the DC-Link of a voltage-source inverter AC motor drive includes a GTO (or transistor) device used for forced-commutation in the regenerating mode, while the current is controlled ON and OFF according to a duty-cycle defined by an hysteresis circuit to hold the current flowing into the inductor to a magnitude which establishes a boost on the capacitor voltage, so that in the motoring, as well as the regenerating mode of operation, the voltage of the capacitor is kept constant and higher than upon the converter output.
