  • Patent number: 5429202
Abstract: A rack and pinion apparatus comprising a toothed rack, the tops of the teeth of which lie in a common plane, the rack and pinion apparatus further comprising an anti-roll mechanism having a rack teeth engaging pad mounted to permit relative movement between the rack and teeth engaging means and so as to be in contact, at any given instant, with the tops of at least two rack teeth.

  • Patent number: 5392874
Abstract: A power assisted steering mechanism for a vehicle, the mechanism including electrically powered drive means for driving the steering mechanism, the drive means including a drive shaft having an input shaft portion drivingly connected to an output shaft portion by resilient means such that rotation of the input shaft portion causes relative rotational displacement between the input shaft portion and the output shaft portion in dependence on the load applied to the output shaft portion, sensor means arranged to produce signals in response to the direction and amount of relative displacement between the input and output shaft portions and an electric motor for driving said output shaft in response to the signals produced by the sensor means.

  • Patent number: 4716983
Abstract: A steering system has annular pressure responsive electric components, such as piezo-electric transducers, mounted between thrust and restraining faces respectively, the transducers respond to a mechanical load applied to them by generating or determining electrical signals which are proportional to the load, the signals are supplied to a comparator by way of electrical connections. The transducers are arranged in pairs on the axially opposed faces of a bearing, so that in response to an axial thrust applied to the bearing by an input shaft of a steering gear incorporated in the system, the signals provided by the transducers will change from a predetermined comparative condition, one signal increasing in response to the increased compressive load on one transducer, the other signal decreasing in response to a decrease in compressive load on the other transducer in the pair.

  • Patent number: 4285130
Abstract: This application covers a device included in the microprocessor control for winders or sheeters; the device is arranged to stop the machine when a desired length of web has been fed by accurately-timed start of deceleration from full speed. This avoids the need to run at a lower speed for a period as the desired length is approached. In the device, the web speed is sensed by a transducer which delivers a speed signal, and from this is calculated the length of web which will be fed during standard deceleration. The result of this calculation can then be compared with the difference between desired length and length already fed (or the result plus length already fed can be compared with desired length) and when the result of this comparison indicates deceleration should start a signal is sent to the braking system. As an alternative to calculation of length of web fed during deceleration from the sensed speed, the result may be obtained by a "table look-up" operation.

  • Patent number: 4267752
Abstract: A paper sheeter for cutting two or more webs simultaneously into sheets has a rotary knife to make the cuts in desired register with marks (e.g. watermarks) carried by the web. A sensor is provided for detecting the marks on each web and a further sensor monitors the knife rotation; signals from the several sensors are fed to a control unit in which the signals from each mark sensor are compared with signals from the knife sensor to produce feed control signals for the respective web. These control signals may be applied to brakes associated with the web supply reels to vary the tension in each web; alternatively one web may be controlled by using the control signals to vary the speed ratio between the knife and pull rolls feeding the webs to the knife.
