  • Patent number: 5758643
Abstract: An improved system is disclosed for monitoring a patient's blood chemistry, wherein the system intermittently draws blood samples from the patient into a special sensor assembly having a plurality of analytical sensors, each sensitive to a particular parameter of the blood. After signals produced by these various sensors have been read, the system reinfuses the blood samples back into the patient. Withdrawal of the successive samples to a desired, optimal position within the sensor assembly is achieved by monitoring signals produced by one or more of the analytical sensors, themselves. This allows a catheter that connects the sensor assembly to the patient to have a variable length and internal volume and obviates the need for a separate, dedicated sensor for detecting the arrival of the blood sample at the desired position.

  • Patent number: 5461559
Abstract: A multi-featured control system which improves the manufacturing capability of the thin-film semiconductor growth process. This system improves repeatability and accuracy of the process, reduces the manpower requirements to operate MBE, and improves the MBE environment for scientific investigation. This system has three levels of feedback control. The first level improves the precision and tracking of the process variables, flux, and substrate temperature. The second level comprises an expert system that uses sensors to monitor the status of the product in order to tailor the process plan in real time so that the exact qualities desired are achieved. The third level features a continuously evolving neural network model of the process which is used to recommend the recipe and command inputs to achieve a desired goal. The third level is particularly useful during the development process for new materials.

  • Patent number: 4483853
Abstract: The (-)-D-isomers of compounds of the general formula ##STR1## in which X stands for an acidic radical, especially a radical of phosphonic acid, sulphonic acid, boronic acid or tetrazole,R stands for an alkylene, alkenylene or alkynylene radical with 3 or more carbon atoms, preferably 3 to 6 carbon atoms, or a C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, andA and B independently of each other stand for a hydrogen atom or a lipophilic radical, especially an ester radical,or salts thereof, or pharmaceutically acceptable bioprecursors thereof, especially (-)-D-aminophosphonopentanoic acid and (-)-D-aminophosphonoheptanoic acid, find use in the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system. The compound aminophosphonoheptanoic acid is also novel as a racemic mixture and the present invention also relates to that compound in racemic form which may be used in the same way as the said (-)-D-isomers.

  • Patent number: 4102028
Abstract: A disc shaped element has a central hole of diameter corresponding to the diameter of a motor shaft upon which an optical encoder assembly is to be mounted. Coaxial with the central hole is a decreased diameter portion dimensioned to be received in a mounting member component of the assembly carrying the light source for the optical encoder. Exact coaxial centering of the mounting member carrying the light source is maintained by the disc shaped element while the mounting member is rigidly secured to the motor itself. Thereafter, the disc shaped element can be removed and the remaining components of the optical encoder assembled with assurance of proper alignment between the light source and the photo cell part of the assembly.
