  • Patent number: 5656140
Abstract: An electrochemical remediation apparatus comprising a cylindrical tank having a plurality of vertical anodes suspended downwardly from a dome-shaped lid and positioned around the circumference of the tank spaced radially inwardly from the inner sidewalls of the tank. A single cathode is positioned at the axis of the cylindrical tank and removably mounted to the lid. A cylindrical metal ion permeable membrane is positioned between the anodes and the cathode. A plurality of nozzles spaced circumferentially around the tank directs pressurized fluid into the tank at a direction having radial, axial and circumferential components. A mixture of water, acid and contaminated earth consisting of approximately 50% contaminated earth is poured into the region between the membrane and the tank sidewalls. The mixture is incubated and fluidized, and contact between metals in the mixture and the anodes causes the metal contaminants to act as sacrificial anodes and thereby to ionize.

  • Patent number: 5580749
Abstract: A probe system for monitoring chemical activity of a target chemical in an environment has first and second marker compounds each bonded to a common substrate to keep the respective markers in physical proximity. The first marker is a chemical that has a maximum emission intensity at a first wavelength, and it is chemically shielded from the environment being studied. The second marker is a chemical that, when in a first state, has a maximum emission intensity at a second wavelength different from the first wavelength and which, in a second state, does not have a maximum emission intensity at the second wavelength. The second marker is convertible between said states through chemical reaction with the target chemical. The common substrate is a carrier particle, the first marker being impregnated within the carrier particle and the second marker being chemically bonded to the exterior surface of the carrier particle.

  • Patent number: 4969480
Abstract: A fountain solution supply system for mixing and supplying a fountain solution, having two or more ingredients mixed in precise concentrations, from a reservoir to a printing press. The system includes a high-capacity pump connected to the reservoir. Substantially more than half of the flow of the fountain solution from the pump is directed through a high pressure line to operate a fluidic pump and then returned to the reservoir. The remainder of the fountain solution is directed through a low pressure line to the printing press. The return line from the printing press is connected to a primary intake of the fluidic pump. An electrically-activated, solenoid valve is connected between a secondary intake of the fluidic pump and a supply of at least one of the ingredients of the solution.
