    Abstract: A fiber optic cable assembly includes a distribution cable and a tether cable. The distribution cable includes a jacket having a generally flat profile such that the periphery of the distribution cable, when viewed in cross-section, includes two major surfaces of the jacket that are generally flat and are connected by arcuate end surfaces of the jacket. The jacket defines a cavity therein. Further, the distribution cable includes strength members embedded in the jacket and positioned on opposing sides of the cavity. The distribution cable includes a plurality of optical fibers extending through the cavity. The tether cable includes an optical fiber that is fusion spliced to one of the optical fibers of the distribution cable by way of an opening in a side of the jacket of the distribution cable.

    Abstract: A fiber optic cable includes a jacket, a pair of strength members, and an optical fiber. The jacket has a cavity, a major dimension and a minor dimension, and a medial portion. The strength members are disposed on opposing sides of the cavity and impart a preferential bend characteristic to the cable. The at least one optical fiber is disposed within the cavity. The jacket includes preferential tear portions disposed between a respective strength member and the medial portion, for separating the strength members from the medial portion.

At least one optical fiber of the distribution cable is accessed and terminated from the distribution cable within the interior portion of the distribution cable. A tether having a first end is attached to the distribution cable through the mid-span access location. The tether has at least one optical fiber optically connected to the at least one terminated optical fiber of the distribution cable at a location within the interior portion of the distribution cable.

    Abstract: A method of forming a low-cost drop cable (10) is disclosed. The method includes providing a protective cover material (352) having an extrusion temperature of 140° C.?TE?160° C. The protective cover material is extruded through a die (420) having a single aperture (424) that defines the cable's elongate cross-sectional shape. The extrusion process involves covering first and second strength members (30) on either side of at least one optical fiber (50). The combination of the low temperature of the extrudable protective cover material and the elongate shape of the single die aperture cause the formation of an oval cavity (20) within the extruded protective cover material. The oval cavity has major and central axes (A1, AC) and surrounds the at least one optical fiber. The strength members lie along the cavity major axis. Tensioning the strength members during extrusion and then releasing the tension causes the drop cable length to be reduced.

    Abstract: Disclosed are tubeless fiber optic cables having strength members, methods of making the cables, and methods for making strength members. Specifically, the concepts of the invention inhibit the distortion and/or influence the cross-sectional shape of the tubeless fiber optic cables due to torsional forces from the strength members. For instance, one tubeless fiber optic cable of the invention uses strength members with a dead-lay construction for inhibiting distortion of the same. Another tubeless fiber optic cable design uses strength members on opposite sides of the cavity where the torsional forces from the strength members are in opposite directions for influencing the cross-sectional shape of the same. Other aspects of the invention are directed to methods for making the tubeless fiber optic cables.
