    Abstract: Methods and systems for enhancing an image exhibiting speckle noise are provided. An image exhibiting the speckle noise is received and a coefficient of variation is estimated in a part of the received image. Either a detail tuning parameter or a smooth tuning parameter are selected based on the estimated coefficient of variation. A maximum likelihood (ML) filter is configured with the selected tuning parameter and the configured ML filter is applied to the part of the received image.
