Patent number: 8177136Abstract: A method of embedding an optical signature in a document and document produced therefrom. The optical signature uses an invisible optical pattern or covering that can reflect light in non-visible wavelengths, such as light in infrared, or fluoresces when exposed to a particular wavelength of light, such as ultra-violet light. The invisible optical pattern can be a covering over another optical pattern, or a base pattern upon which a second optical pattern is embedded.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2010Date of Patent: May 15, 2012Assignee: Scientific Games International, Inc.Inventors: Fred W. Patent number: 8033905Abstract: A lottery game played on an electronic game machine using a pre-printed lottery ticket is disclosed. The lottery ticket is embedded with game and prize information that can be read by the game machine. After inserting the lottery ticket into the game machine, the player may play a game using the game machine based upon the information on the lottery ticket. If the player is a winner, an award is given to the player. The player can redeem the award for cash with the lottery authority.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2006Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Scientific Games International, Inc.Inventors: Kenneth E. Patent number: 8037307Abstract: A system and method for providing an authentication code across a network for use in authentication of documents, such as printed lottery tickets. The system includes document-printing terminals that include a key that is used in a mathematical function with the bet information for a specific-game entry to generate a document code that is sent to a central server. The central server stores the received document code and then generates an authentication code for the document desired to be printed at the terminal, and sends the authentication code back to the terminal for printing on the issued document. The authentication code can be a further mathematical processing of the document code. Verification of the document occurs from comparison of the authentication code on the document and stored authentication and/or document codes at the server.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2006Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Scientific Games International Inc.Inventor: Kenneth E. Irwin, Jr.

Patent number: 7788482Abstract: A system method for providing an authentication code across a network for use in authentication of documents, such as printed lottery tickets. The system includes document-printing terminals that create a first key and a second key, with the first key used to generate an authentication code for printing on the document, and the second key is sent to a central server and usable to verify that the first key created the authentication code. The central server can also provide ticket serial numbers for tickets being dispensed at the terminals and the first key can be combined with the serial number and other secondary data to create the authentication code.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2005Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Scientific Games International, Inc.Inventor: Kenneth E. Publication number: 20100181755Abstract: Described are a number of mechanisms that can reduce transaction costs and increase the economic viability of a number of products. Included is a combination instant lottery ticket and debit card that makes it possible to issue prepaid debit cards having a relatively low monetary value. Also included is a combination on-line ticket/receipt and debit card that can automate the prize paying process, simplifying the retailer's responsibilities while reducing the potential for fraud. Various cash flow and authentication techniques such as age and location verification, nano payment methods and spam filters based on these mechanisms are also described. In addition, instant lottery tickets, and in particular, losing tickets can be provided with a small residual value by placing account information on the ticket. In another version, a lottery ticket can be combined with a payment card that operates as a closed payment system whereby the payment card can only be used with a specified vendor.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 20, 2010Publication date: July 22, 2010Inventors: Kenneth E. Irwin, JR., Mather Lindsay, Gary R. Streeter, Patricia M. Irwin

Publication number: 20090287580Abstract: A method for distribution and sale of lottery tickets includes defining sets of lottery tickets uniquely designated for a particular retail establishment, with the number and prize amount of winning tickets within each set being known to the central lottery authority. The sets of lottery tickets are provided to the respective designated retail establishments at a price that is a function of the total sales value of all of the tickets within the set to the purchasing public. The lottery tickets are sold to patrons of the retail establishment, while making known to the patrons that winning lottery tickets are redeemable only at the retail establishment where the lottery tickets were sold. Any winning tickets are redeemable only at the retail establishment at which the winning lottery tickets were sold. Lottery tickets uniquely configured for use in the system are also encompassed.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2009Publication date: November 19, 2009Applicant: SCIENTIFIC GAMES INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventor: KENNETH E. Patent number: 7252222Abstract: A method of embedding an optical signature in a document and document produced therefrom. The optical signature is an optical pattern generated from a known value, such as a mathematical, geometric, trigonometric, size, phase, and the like, and the same value can be generated from examination of a document having the embedded optical pattern. The document can be validated, authenticated, or the determination of a valid copy of an original document with the embedded optical signature made through comparison of the known value and the value generated from the optical pattern on the document. The optical pattern can also be generated from other identification codes on the document.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2004Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: Scientific Game Royalty CorporationInventors: Fred W. Patent number: 6875105Abstract: A lottery ticket validation system validates a probability lottery ticket that has predetermined play rules and that includes a plurality of player removable material covering play spots that in turn cover play indicia located in predetermined locations on the ticket. In addition, validation data is printed on the ticket in the form of a bar code. The validation system includes a housing, a controller located in the housing, a document channel configured in the housing, a sensor, a data reader, a transport mechanism, a scanning circuit, a memory, a processor, and a stigmatization circuit. The sensor includes an optical detector located in the housing and operatively connected to the controller. The data reader is operatively connected to the controller and is adapted to read the bar code. The transport mechanism is located in the housing and is operatively connected to the controller. The transport mechanism includes at least one roller, a plurality of ticket sensors, and a motor.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2000Date of Patent: April 5, 2005Assignee: Scientific Games Inc.Inventors: William F. Patent number: 6776337Abstract: Determination of the authenticity and integrity of various types of documents such as lottery tickets is accomplished by using an electronic verification machine to compare data contained in electronic circuits printed on the document to document data printed on the document. The electronic circuits are printed on the document in conductive or semiconductive ink using, for example, the gravure printing process, and the presence and status of the circuits can be used to verify or authenticate the document. Data can be represented in the electronic circuits by the electrical signature of the circuit which is measured by the electronic verification machine. In the case of lottery tickets, a ticket can be validated by having the electronic verification machine determine which play spots have been removed from the ticket and comparing data on the ticket with the removed play spots to determine a play redemption value for the ticket.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2002Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Panda Eng.
