  • Patent number: 6206125
Abstract: An adjustable-width axle assembly of a work machine. The axle assembly includes an outer tube having a side wall which has a recess defined therein. The axle assembly further includes an inner tube positioned within the outer tube. The inner tube has a side wall. The axle assembly further includes a contact member having an extended position and a retracted position. The contact member is urged into contact with the side wall of the inner tube so as to prevent movement of the inner tube relative to the outer tube when the contact member is positioned in the extended position. The contact member is received into the recess defined in the side wall of the outer tube so as to allow the inner tube to move relative to the outer tube when the contact member is positioned in the retracted position. A method of locking an adjustable-width axle assembly of a work machine is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6139045
Abstract: A vehicle having a pair of front wheels coupled to a wheel assembly is provided. The wheel assembly includes a wheel-spacing mechanism, a pair of spaced-apart spindle assemblies, and a steering mechanism. The wheel-spacing mechanism includes a center axle tube, a pair of axle arms coupled to the center axle tube for axial telescoping movement relative to the center axle tube, and means for extending and retracting the axle arms relative to the center axle tube. Each of the pair of spaced-apart spindle assemblies includes a spindle shaft coupled to the respective axle arm for pivoting movement about a substantially vertical axis. Each wheel is coupled to the respective spindle shaft for rotation about a substantially horizontal wheel axis. The steering mechanism includes a pair of telescoping drive shafts and means for rotating each telescoping drive shaft about a horizontal pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 6059201
Abstract: A crop sprayer includes a number of wheels, a chassis supported by the number of wheels, a boom frame supported by the chassis, and a boom arm segment. The boom arm segment operates in a first mode of operation in which the boom arm segment is maintained at a fixed position relative to the boom frame and a second mode of operation in which the boom arm segment is allowed to freely pivot relative to the boom frame. The crop sprayer further includes an actuator supported on the boom arm segment. The actuator is movable between a pivot-preventing position and a pivot-enabling position. The boom arm segment operates in the first mode of operation when the actuator is positioned in the pivot-preventing position. Movement of the actuator from the pivot-preventing position to the pivot-enabling position causes the boom arm segment to operate in the second mode of operation. A method of preventing damage to a boom arm assembly during a collision between the boom arm assembly and an obstruction is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6056210
Abstract: A crop sprayer includes a support assembly including a chassis member and an offset frame member which are secured together so as to define a mounting space. The chassis member defines a chassis bottom surface which is positioned at a first vertical height above the ground. The crop sprayer further includes a storage tank, supported by the chassis member, for storing a quantity of liquid therein. Also, the crop sprayer includes a boom arm assembly which is supported by the chassis member. The crop sprayer additionally includes a number of nozzles in fluid communication with the storage tank, with the number of nozzles being supported by the boom arm assembly.

  • Patent number: 6042020
Abstract: A crop sprayer includes a chassis, and a lift frame secured to the chassis, the lift frame having a left boom support and a right boom support. The crop sprayer includes a boom frame having a left boom support contact member and a right boom support contact member, wherein the boom frame is movable between (i) a first vertical position relative to the lift frame, and (ii) a second vertical position relative to the lift frame, and wherein the second vertical position is located at a height vertically above the first vertical position. The crop sprayer further includes a lift cylinder operable to move the boom frame in relation to the lift frame between the first vertical position and the second vertical position. The left boom support, the right boom support, the left boom support contact member, and the right boom support contact member are each spaced apart from the lift cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6022291
Abstract: A speed control assembly includes a throttle which controls the rotational speed of a crankshaft of an engine and a hand lever which is operatively coupled to the throttle. The speed control assembly further includes a forward switch operatively coupled to a forward clutch. The forward switch causes the forward clutch to couple the crankshaft to a drive shaft so that the crankshaft rotates the drive shaft in a forward rotational direction when the forward switch is actuated by placing the hand lever in a forward position. The first switch also causes the forward clutch to decouple the crankshaft from the drive shaft so that the crankshaft does not rotate the drive shaft in the forward rotational direction when the forward switch is deactuated. The speed control assembly yet further includes a reverse switch operatively coupled to a reverse clutch.
