Patent number: 5622611Abstract: A zero sack volume fluid flow regulator generates upstream turbulence for control of fluid flow, fluid spray distribution and fluid droplet size. The fluid flow regulator includes a seal layer for selectively controlling fluid flow. The seal layer is resiliently movable relative to a base layer to selectively constrict a turbulence inducing intermediate channel within the regulator and selectively control fluid flow. Patent number: 5071101Abstract: A casting mold for use in the manufacture of intraocular/contact lenses. The casting mold comprises a base and a cup-like feature attached to the base. The base has a frusto-conical configuration defined by a first planar circular cross-sectional area taken adjacent to the cup-like feature and a second planar circular cross-sectional area taken at a distance remote from the cup-like feature. The circumferences of the first and second cross-sectional areas respectively form lips. The first cross-sectional area is substantially less than the second cross-sectional area, and the portion of the base defining its side walls extends between the respective lips of the first and second cross-sectional areas and lies substantially within the generatrix of a line connecting the respective lips of the first and second cross-sectional areas rotated about the axis connecting the centers of the first and second cross-sectional areas.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Inventor: Kenneth E. Wood

Patent number: 4909969Abstract: Fabrication of contact lenses whereby the yield of lenses removed from plastic casting molds is significantly increased. In fabricating contact lenses where a lens is initially formed in a plastic casting mold, the mold is compressed to a degree sufficient to initiate permanent deformation of the mold material, in progressive steps, incrementally decreasing in diameter from a starting diameter substantially larger than the diameter of the molded lens, until the lens self-detaches from the mold.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1989Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Inventor: Kenneth E. Wood

Patent number: 4513691Abstract: An animal pen comprises a plurality of frame members interconnected to provide an animal receiving structure having a front end and a rear end, a door adjacent the rear end for entry of the animal head first into the pen, an advancing means mounted on the main frame for movement forwardly of the frame to engage the rear of the animal to urge the animal forwardly in the structure, a first hydraulic ram to actuate the advancing means mounted between the advancing means and the main frame, and a yoke comprising a pair of closure members mounted in the frame for movement forwardly and inwardly of the frame to close around a front of the animal, and a linkage between the closure members, a second hydraulic ram between the linkage and the main frame to actuate the closure members.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1983Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Inventor: Kenneth E. Wood

Patent number: 4407165Abstract: Apparatus for preloading a spring loaded threaded member. The apparatus is formed of three telescoping tubes. The innermost tube has means to prevent rotation of the threaded member. The middle tube is threadedly engaged with the threaded member and by axial movement applies a preload thereto. The outer tube engages a nut which may be rotated to retain the threaded member in axial position to maintain the preload.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1981Date of Patent: October 4, 1983Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Alan M. Lovelace, Kenneth E. Wood

Patent number: 4320911Abstract: Penetration apparatus, for very high temperature applications in which a base plug (12) is inserted into an opening through a bulkhead (11), the base plug (12) having a head shape (14b) seating against the highest temperature surface (11a) of the bulkhead, which may be the skin of the nose cone or other part of a space vehicle intended for nondestructive atmospheric reentry. From the second side of the bulkhead (11b) at which the less severe environment is extant, a bayonet plug (14) is inserted into the base plug and engages an internal shoulder (19) therein upon 90.degree. rotation. The bayonet plug (14) has an integral flanged portion (14a) and a pair of ramping washers (16 and 17) are located between the flange (14a) and the second bulkhead surface (11b) with a spacing washer (15) as necessary.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1980Date of Patent: March 23, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Kenneth E. Patent number: 4268858Abstract: An underwater survey system where the existence of a large number of multiplex signals in conjunction with a relatively poor frequency response over a long tow cable, results in a situation where the transmission of a normal 30 frames per second TV picture is impossible. The invention describes a method of transmitting a reduced bandwidth TV system where the signals are modulated on a carrier and the lower sideband used. The large signal loss at the upper frequency is compensated by equalizers, which can result in objectionable interference, when the vehicle is close to the receiving end. A remotely controlled carrier is used to minimize this interference.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1977Date of Patent: May 19, 1981Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Kenneth E. Wood

Patent number: 4071895Abstract: The position of a carrier from a navigational reference generates X,Y coordinate navigation signals which are scaled as distance along a TV line of a TV display and a line number in the frame of the TV picture. A continual updated track of a moving vehicle is therefore displayed on a TV monitor, and if a video disc is used, can be recalled from the non-volatile memory for later replay.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1976Date of Patent: January 31, 1978Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventors: Kenneth E. Wood, James T. O'Farrell

Patent number: 4047147Abstract: Docking sonar uses first and second fan-shaped beams sequentially scanning a target zone in mutually perpendicular directions. Target returns from one beam scan are compared with target returns from the other beam scan and the results are placed into a storage medium such as a video disc and then displayed on a conventional TV monitor, with brightness of the target on the display being an indication of target range.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1976Date of Patent: September 6, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventors: Kenneth E. Wood, James T. O'Farrell

Patent number: 4024490Abstract: The beam signals of a multibeam sidelooking sonar system are initially time compressed in a first, relatively low speed, logic section and thereafter transferred to a relatively higher speed logic section for placement onto a video disc. The signals from the video disc are presented to a TV display with the information being portrayed as a moving window. The scan conversion operation may be modified to provide a substantially correct picture geometric format as the vehicle carrying the sidelooking sonar apparatus varies its velocity.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1976Date of Patent: May 17, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventors: Kenneth E. Wood, Wesley E. Stevens

Patent number: 3934077Abstract: An underwater floodlit scene is viewed by a TV camera. The first few active TV lines in the scan format, indicative of the illuminated field where backscatter is a minimum, are stored on a video disk. As the apparatus travels over a target area to be viewed, subsequent portions of the TV video signal from the minimum backscatter area are subsequently stored on the disk. The stored signals are then displayed on a TV monitor as a moving window display. The number of active TV lines gated for storage on the disk may be made proportional to the carrier vehicle speed, altitude and camera viewing angle, or field of view.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1974Date of Patent: January 20, 1976Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventors: Kenneth E. Wood, James T. O'Farrell, William F. Parrish, Gordon M. Roesler
