Patent number: 5320299Abstract: A rider roll system for exerting an even nip load force along the surface of a roll of paper being wound from a continuous on-coming web in a winder comprises a plurality of rider roll wheel elements, each of which is connected to a common source of hydraulic pressure to provide the same rolling nip force against the wound paper roll. The rider roll wheel elements are mounted to a beam which is translationally movable above the wound paper roll. The beam and individual rider roll wheel elements are moved upwardly as a function of the increase in the diameter of the wound paper roll. The relationship of the beam movement relative to the diameter of the wound paper roll is controlled by a programmable logic controller. The individual wheel elements are loaded against a counter-balance force so as to provide equal, but cushioned, nip force against the surface of the wound paper roll at short intervals along its length.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1992Date of Patent: June 14, 1994Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Donald C. Patent number: 4436302Abstract: Apparatus for the shingling of cut sheets of paper as they pass between conveyance on a high-speed tape conveyor and a low-speed tape conveyor is provided by a two-stage slowdown arrangement. At the first stage, a slowdown mechanism, comprising two rolls arranged respectively above and below each sheet passing through a drop-off area from the high-speed conveyor to the low-speed conveyor, serves to engage the tail portion of the sheet in a nip such that the sheet is slowed down to a speed approximately 30 to 40% of the speed of the high-speed conveyor. In this manner, the lead edge of a next succeeding sheet overlaps with the trailing edge of the nipped sheet in a drop-off area from the high-speed tape conveyor.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1981Date of Patent: March 13, 1984Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventors: Kenneth G. Patent number: 4405126Abstract: A gate station incorporates air pressure flows to direct clips in a production stream through the station and to selectively divert defective clips into a separate reject steam. Mounted on a support plate in the station are an upstream manifold, continuously supplied with low pressure air, and a downstream manifold, having a plurality of downwardly directed air ports and selectively supplied with high pressure air. Air flow from the upstream manifold is directed laterally over the upper surface of a clip so as to enable atmospheric pressure to maintain the clip travelling through the gate station in the production stream. If a clip is to be diverted, the downstream manifold is injected with high pressure air causing blasts of high velocity air through the downwardly directed ports. This high velocity air disrupts the flow from the upstream manifold and forces the leading edge of the defective clip downwards, pressing the clip into the reject stream.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventors: Kenneth G. Frye, Donald R. Grody, Gerald A. Guild

Patent number: 4346881Abstract: Paper sheets are advanced seriatim between high speed upper and lower conveyor belts across a gap onto a slower speed multi-belt conveyor with which the upper high speed belts cooperate to form a sheet controlling tunnel. Static eliminating and sheet knock-down air is directed through the upper high speed belts and into the sheets traversing the gap. Advance of the sheets across the gap is facilitated by impermanent wave-like longitudinal stiffening rib deflection of the sheets where they leave the high speed conveyor belts. After each sheet has been fully received on the slow speed conveyor, its high speed travel is stopped by stop roll means to assure overlap of a succeeding sheet thereon. The stop roll means cooperate with the slower speed conveyor belts to effect impermanent wave-like longitudinal jam preventing stiffening rib deflection of the sheets.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1981Date of Patent: August 31, 1982Assignee: Lenox Machine Company, Inc.Inventor: Kenneth G. Patent number: 4319442Abstract: The instant invention concerns a cartoning assembly which operates in conjunction with a sheet stacker to pile sheets directly in their carton. The assembly loads a three-sided carton having an open top into the stacker and supports the carton there such that sheets accumulate in the carton. After a predetermined number of sheets have been piled in the carton, succeeding sheets piling into the stacker are segregated and separately supported away from the predetermined pile. The carton is then transferred to a discharge conveyor for processing and lidding. Meanwhile, a further carton is loaded into the stacker and supported beneath the succeeding pile. The succeeding pile is then deposited into the further carton. The further carton is supported in the stacker until the predetermined number of sheets accumulate and the process repeats.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1980Date of Patent: March 16, 1982Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventor: Kenneth G.
