  • Patent number: 4844620
Abstract: System for preparing on a continuous basis high-internal-phase ratio emulsions wherein the external and internal phase materials making up such emulsions have highly disparate viscosities. The phase materials are introduced into a recirculation line and a portion of the prepared emulsion is continuously directly recycled through the system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 24, 1986
Date of Patent: July 4, 1989
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
Inventors: Kenneth J. Lissant, Charles H. Beltman, Guy M. Bradley
  • Patent number: 4396417
Abstract: Thixotropic high internal phase ratio emulsions containing biologically active agents including biocides, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, defoliants, desiccants, seed disinfectants, growth regulators, etc., which are useful, for example, in agricultural applications. These emulsions include oily in non-oily and non-oily in oily emulsions having an internal phase of at least 60% but preferably 80-95%.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 26, 1978
Date of Patent: August 2, 1983
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
    Inventor: Kenneth J. Lissant
  • Patent number: 4084940
Abstract: This invention relates to a safety fuel which is characterized as a combustible high internal phase ratio emulsion which, although relatively non-ignitible, can be ignited under conventional ignition. This safety fuel is a high internal phase ratio emulsion having a combustible internal phase and an aqueous external phase containing sufficient volatile combustible materials in the external phase to ignite under conventional ignition conditions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 23, 1974
Date of Patent: April 18, 1978
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
    Inventor: Kenneth J. Lissant
  • Patent number: 4040857
Abstract: Non-Newtonian cosmetic, nutritive and pharmaceutical compositions as exemplified by thixotropic high internal phase ratio emulsions of cosmetic, nutritive and pharmaceutical agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 21, 1975
Date of Patent: August 9, 1977
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation

  • Patent number: 4018426
Abstract: A system for the continuous production of thixotropic high internal phase ratio emulsions. The system includes supply means providing individual streams of an inverter phase (an emulsifier and external phase), and an immiscible internal phase. These streams are precisely regulated as to a preselected ratio by flow rate controllers which regulate the flow responsively to pressure changes in the supply means. The internal and inverter phases are received at a selected rate and composition within a mixing means which produces the loss distribution stepwise of the internal phase progressively in amounts into the inverter phase, thereby forming a composition with the desired ratio of the internal phase, emulsifier, and external phase of the desired emulsion. A pumping means moves this composition at the selected rate to an outlet means for passing the resultant emulsion to a subsequent utilization.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 17, 1976
Date of Patent: April 19, 1977
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
Inventors: Richard E. Mertz, Kenneth J. Lissant
  • Patent number: 3988508
Abstract: Unique polymers are prepared by the polymerization of high internal phase ratio emulsions of monomers in aqueous systems.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 8, 1973
Date of Patent: October 26, 1976
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
    Inventor: Kenneth J. Lissant
  • Patent number: 3983213
Abstract: This invention relates to the use of high internal phase ratio emulsions in restricting the access of persons and animals to an area; for example in crowd control, etc.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 26, 1973
Date of Patent: September 28, 1976
    Assignee: Petrolite Corporation
    Inventor: Kenneth J. Lissant
  • Patent number: 3974116
Abstract: This invention relates to a non-settling suspension of solid chemical in a high internal phase ratio emulsion, said solid chemical being substantially insoluble in, and non-reactive with, either phase of the emulsion. This emulsion suspension, which is stable to settling and deterioration, can be added to a system with much greater facility than can be effected by adding the solid alone.

These streams are precisely regulated as to a preselected ratio by flow rate controllers which regulate the flow responsively to pressure changes in the supply means. A pumping means moves this composition at the selected rate to an outlet means for passing the resultant emulsion to a subsequent utilization.
