Publication number: 20150343229Abstract: In embodiments, an emergency external defibrillator system is configured for use by a local rescuer in cooperation with a remote rescuer to assist a patient. The external defibrillator system includes a sensor to generate a patient value that represents a physiological parameter of the patient. The system also includes a communication module to transmit the patient value to another device of a remote rescuer, and to receive in response an incoming message that contains an encoded sound. For the local rescuer, the system also includes a screen to display the patient value, and a speaker to play the sound concurrently with the screen displaying the patient value. An advantage is that the local rescuer can receive guidance from the remote rescuer.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 21, 2015Publication date: December 3, 2015Inventors: Kenneth J. Peterson, Dana S. Lewis, Mitchell A. Smith, Cheryl Protas, David B. Stewart, Gregory T. Kavounas

Publication number: 20150238692Abstract: A computing architecture, system and method are disclosed for use in a medical device for providing decision support to a caregiver. The computing architecture includes a memory, a processor in communication with the memory, and an instance of a primary rules-based service configured to provide instruction events, the instance providing a primary processing thread of instruction events for coaching treatment of a patient. A software manager module includes an artificial intelligence architecture. The artificial intelligence architecture is configured to provide an instance of a conditional rules-based service for providing instruction events. The instance provided by the artificial intelligence architecture provides a processing thread of instruction events for coaching treatment of a patient that is independent of the primary processing thread and is configured to trigger an action on the occurrence of a pre-defined set of input conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2014Publication date: August 27, 2015Inventors: Kenneth J. Peterson, Dana Lewis, Michell Smith, Cheryl Protas, James Wootten, David B. Stewart, Garrett Kotlarchik, Jeffery Edwards, D Craig Edwards

Patent number: 8183823Abstract: In an embodiment, a medical device can be used with a power adapter system. In addition, it can receive a data set from the power adapter system, and examine the data set to determine whether the data set confirms or not an authentication of the power adapter for use with the medical device. If the authentication is not confirmed, the external medical device can operate differently than otherwise. For example, power can be drawn from the power adapter system only if an inside battery is not charged.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2010Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Physio-Control, Inc.Inventors: James S. Neumiller, John C. Daynes, Kenneth J. Peterson, Thomas J. McGrath, Richard C. Nova

Patent number: 7728548Abstract: A method for operating an external medical device such as a defibrillator includes obtaining a data set from a battery pack and examining the data set to determine whether the battery pack is authenticated for use in the external medical device. If the examination does not confirm the authentication, the method includes causing the device to follow a non-authenticated battery pack protocol. The non-authenticated battery pack protocol may include drawing power from the non-authenticated battery pack only if it is the only available source of power for the external medical device. It may include limiting functionality of the external medical device. It may include modifying the battery status information display for the non-authenticated battery pack.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2008Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: Physio-Control, Inc.Inventors: John C.
