  • Patent number: 4738432
Abstract: A valve such as penstock with a gate (13) which slides across an opening in a frame (10, 11, 12). On at least one side of the gate (13) is a two-part sealing strip consisting of resilient layer (22) and a superimposed bearing portion (23). Attached to or integral with bearing portion (23) is a thickened part (24) which limits the maximum compression of the resilient layer (22) when the valve is closed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 11, 1987
Date of Patent: April 19, 1988
    Assignee: Simon-Hartley Limited
Inventors: Frederick B. Gardner, Malcolm C. Hanson, Kenneth J. Richardson
  • Patent number: 4660937
Abstract: A dichroic dye-containing nematic liquid crystal mirror has a photocell connected thereto to automatically change, that is, to dim or brighten, the mirror upon exposure to light. Under the preferred operating conditions, the mirror functions as an ordinary mirror but is dimmed by light. The invention is especially suited for the rearview mirror of an automobile.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 25, 1984
Date of Patent: April 28, 1987
    Assignee: Crystaloid Electronics Company
    Inventor: Kenneth J. Richardson
  • Patent number: 4365868
Abstract: A liquid crystal device for direct display of analog information in images and patterns includes a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between a front and a back transparent plate. Transparent conducting films are applied to selected portions of the sides of both front and back transparent plates adjacent to the liquid material. A resistor network is provided electrically continuous with at least one of the transparent conducting films for impressing a voltage gradient transversely across the transparent conducting films so as to permit the selective, incremental reorientation of the liquid crystal material into the desired images and patterns.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 17, 1980
Date of Patent: December 28, 1982
