Patent number: 6935972Abstract: A breakaway basketball rim assembly in which the mounting bracket and rim are operably interconnected by a torsion rod which twists resiliently in response to an impact or other downward load on the rim. The torsion rod may extend parallel to the backboard, with one end being mounted to the mounting bracket and the other end being mounted to the rim, so that the torsion rod allows the rim to deflect downwardly about an axis that extends parallel to the backboard. The torsion rod may be mounted to overlapping flanges on the mounting bracket and the rim. There may also be a longitudinal torsion rod that extends perpendicular to the transverse torsion rod, so as to permit the rim to deflect downwardly about axes that extend both parallel and perpendicular to the backboard.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2002Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Porter Athletic Equipment CompanyInventor: Kenneth L. Patent number: 6685204Abstract: A step assembly for a pickup truck or other vehicle having a hitch receiver and a tailgate. The assembly includes a stationary upper support that is inserted in the receiver and a sliding lower support having a step mounted to its rearward end. The lower support is extensible from a retracted position in which the step member is positioned proximate the hitch receiver, to an extended position in which the step member is positioned rearwardly of the receiver by a distance sufficient that the step member may be stood upon when the tailgate of the vehicle is an open, lowered position. The step member pivots from a horizontal orientation in the deployed position to a vertical orientation when installed.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2002Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Inventor: Kenneth L Hehr

Patent number: 6503160Abstract: A breakaway basketball rim assembly in which the mounting bracket and rim are operably interconnected by a torsion rod which twists resiliently in response to an impact or other downward load on the rim. The torsion rod may extend parallel to the backboard, with one end being fixedly mounted to the mounting bracket and the other end being fixedly mounted to the rim, so that the torsion rod allows the rim to deflect downwardly about an axis that extends parallel to the backboard. The torsion rod may be mounted to overlapping flanges on the mounting bracket and the rim. There may also be a longitudinal torsion rod that extends perpendicular to the transverse torsion rod, so as to permit the rim to deflect downwardly about axes that extend both parallel and perpendicular to the backboard.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2001Date of Patent: January 7, 2003Assignee: Porter Athletic Equipment CompanyInventor: Kenneth L Hehr

Patent number: 6401999Abstract: A pivotable carrier assembly for mounting to a vehicle trailer hitch. The carrier assemble includes a lower support which is mounted to the hitch, and a pivotable upright support having a rack head rotatably mounted to the upper end thereof. A linkage rotates the head in response to the upright support being pivoted away from the vehicle, so as to maintain the load in an upright orientation. The linkage includes upper and lower crank links which are connected by an elongate actuating rod. The rack may be configured to carry any suitable cargo, including bicycles or skis, for example.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Inventor: Kenneth L. Hehr

Patent number: 6080071Abstract: A breakaway basketball rim assembly in which there is a release assembly which operably interconnects the base member and the rim member, the release assembly being configured to release the rim member in response to a downward load which is received at any point along an extended frontal arc of the circular hoop portion, so that the hoop tilts downwardly generally in the direction of the load. There is also a reaction load mechanism for returning the hoop to its horizontal playing position. In a preferred embodiment, a U-shaped fulcrum joint extends between the reaction load in the hoop so as to provide a pivot point in line between the reaction load and any impact point along the extended frontal arc of the hoop. The joint is configured so that the rim releases in response to a substantially identical impact load anywhere along the frontal arc. The rim comprises a rim portion, a backboard mounting portion, and bolts for securing the rim portion to the mounting portion.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1998Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: Basketball Products International, Inc.Inventors: Ronald P. Patent number: 5244193Abstract: A T-slot bolt sleeve for retaining the head of a conventional bolt in the T-slot of a machine tool table. The sleeve has a lower base block portion which slides in the main portion of the T-slot, and a neck portion which extends upwardly from this so as to ride in the relatively narrow entrance slot. There is a recess in the bottom of the base block for receiving the head of the bolt, and the shank of the bolt passes through a bore which extends upwardly from this. This holds the bolt in an inverted position so that the threaded end extends upwardly from the table for attachment of a nut or other fitting. The bottom of the base block is provided with a planar bearing surface which supports the assembly against side-to-side rocking as this is slid through the T-slot. The invention permits ordinary bolts of various lengths to be used in place of conventional T-nuts or T-bolts.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1992Date of Patent: September 14, 1993Inventor: Kenneth L. Patent number: 4742856Abstract: A machine to cut grooves in the mitred end portions of frame members of a picture frame, so that connectors can be inserted in these grooves and join the members to form the picture frame. A base structure mounts a pair of frame members spaced from one another, and a motor with a router bit is positioned with the bit between the frame membersd, with the motor and bit being moved laterally in opposite directions to form the grooves.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1987Date of Patent: May 10, 1988Assignee: The Thumbnail CompanyInventors: Kenneth L.
