    Abstract: A system for transmitting data signals over a communications channel comprises a transmitter modem having means for encoding data signals and a generator for superimposing a first signature signal on the encoded data and a receiver modem which superimposes a second signature signal on the received data. The second signature signal is identical to the first such that the signature signals cancel each other if the transmitter and receiver modems are in synchronism.
