  • Patent number: 8389918
Abstract: An actuated feedforward controlled solar tracker system including a sub-frame supporting at least one solar panel, a post supporting the sub-frame, and a linking mechanism connecting the sub-frame and post, where the linking mechanism includes a first axle, second axle and body member. The linking mechanism's first and second axles are disposed orthogonal to each other and are separated by the body member. The system includes at least two linear actuators, a rotational joint connecting the linear actuators and sub-frame, and a driver system that drives the actuators. Additionally, the system includes a feedforward control system including a computer that calculates desired positions of the linear actuators using multiple inputs and communicates with the driver system to drive the linear actuators, and a feedback control system that relays information gathered by sensor devices to the feedforward control system, where the feedforward and feedback control systems function in an integrated manner.

  • Publication number: 20100185333
Abstract: A feedforward control system for a solar tracker that includes a solar tracker apparatus including at least two actuators and having a driver system for driving the actuators. The system includes a means for acquiring solar position angles for a given location, date and time. The system includes a computer including a program for performing mathematical calculations, the program being capable of: acquiring a plurality of solar position angles for a given day, arranging timing of the solar position angles for use in at least one spline curve that relates the solar position angles to the plurality of actuators, calculating the spline curve and its coefficients, calculating a first derivative of the spline curve, using the spline curve and first derivative of the spline curve to calculate drive requirements of the actuators, creating outputs, and communicating the outputs to the driver system to drive the actuators to desired positions.

  • Publication number: 20100180884
Abstract: An actuated solar tracker that includes a sub-frame capable of supporting at least one solar panel, at least one post for supporting the sub-frame, and a linking mechanism that connects the sub-frame and post. The linking mechanism includes a first axle, second axle and body member that connects the first axle to the second axle. The first axle and the second axle of the linking mechanism are disposed substantially orthogonal to each other and are separated by the body member. The solar tracker also includes at least two linear actuators, each containing a first end and second end, a rotational joint connecting the second end of the linear actuators to the sub-frame, and a driver system that drives the linear actuators. The solar tracker includes a controller for calculating desired positions of the linear actuators and communicating with the driver system to drive the linear actuators to desired positions.
