  • Publication number: 20160194142
Abstract: A carton suitable for packaging a coil of wire with a payout tube has a cover for selectably closing the open side of a five-sided clamshell. The carton can be loaded by placing the coil and payout tube on the cover and then closing the clamshell over the coil. The clamshell has a payout tube aperture and an entryway that permits the clamshell to fit down over the payout tube with the tube extending through the clamshell. Doors open to permit initial access of the tube to the aperture during closure of the clamshell. The doors then close to prevent the tube from becoming dislodged from the aperture. Guide flaps constrain the coil during closure of the clamshell. The final panel of the carton to be closed is secured on all of its free edges to prevent inadvertent opening of the carton. Fold lines are reinforced with reinforcing tape. The carton blank is laid out to have a waste percentage of less than 20%.

  • Patent number: 9371171
Abstract: A carton has a series of panels including top and bottom panels, side panels, and front and rear panels which collectively define an interior space for carrying wire or other filamentary material. The carton is formed from a unitary blank. The cartons can be set up by an automated machine without intervention of an operator. The carton include an interior channel located between two, aligned exterior holes located in opposing panels of the carton. The interior channel is formed from several hingedly connected panels, at least one of which is attached to the carton. The hingedly connected panels are folded around or rolled to form the interior channel, which is inserted into the carton. Once assembled a shaft or rod may be passed through one of the exterior holes, through the interior channel, and out the other exterior hole. The interior channel reinforces the structure of the carton and further allows the carton to hang from a shaft or rod without the carton tearing.

  • Patent number: 8708144
Abstract: An adapter for inserting into a carton containing a non-reel coil of filamentary material or wire has a shaft-receiving sleeve supported by a box structure. The adapter's box structure has top and back walls joined at right angles and reinforced by side walls. Knobs extend outwardly from the side walls and have openings therethrough. Ribs on the underside of the top wall define a channel which is aligned with the openings in the knobs. The ribs, top wall and knobs define a sleeve which is oriented such that it may receive a shaft or rod of a wire pulling rack. Alternatively, said adapter having a box structure with walls only in two perpendicular planes. At least two of said walls forming a channel extending outwardly that may receive a shaft or rod.

  • Patent number: 8596518
Abstract: A carton has a lifting panel, at least one alternate lifting panel, side, front and rear panels that collectively define an interior space for receiving a heavy weight of non-reel coil of filamentary material or coil products such as wire. The panels may include three hand holes, two of which are reinforced by two adapters insertable into the interior space. One form of adapter is assembled from a blank of foldable material and has top, front, bottom and back walls reinforced by gusset plates which are located remotely from the side edges of the top and bottom walls. The maximum width of the adapter top and bottom walls is less than the distance between opposed side panels of the carton. First and second retention members are formed in the panels and extend into the interior space of the carton where they are engageable with the adapters to support them adjacent a hand hole.

The adapter's structure has top, front, bottom and back walls reinforced by side gussets. The underside of the top wall, the interior of the back wall, and the top of the bottom wall of the adapter define a channel. The channel is oriented such that it may receive a shaft or rod of a wire pulling rack. The adapter may be assembled from a blank of foldable material. The adapter blank may be manufactured as a detachable element of a carton blank which is also used to construct a carton to hold a non-reel coil of filamentary material.

  • Patent number: 5950472
Abstract: Apparatus for forming beads in the cylindrical wall of a metal drum blank comprising a die head and an opposed roller, for engaging the interior and exterior surfaces, respectively, of a cylindrical drum blank. The die head has first, second and third coaxial, circular dies, each made up of plural, wedge-shaped die elements. The roller has two coaxial peripheral edges cooperable with the dies to form a W-style bead. The second die is located between the first and third dies and is radially expansible, by the frusto-conical surface of a cam, for producing a standard bead. The same frusto-conical surface also expands the first die, and a separate frusto-conical surface expands the third die. Lands on the cam engage the wedge-shaped elements of the first and third dies and maintain the first and third dies at fixed radial positions in engagement with the inner cylindrical wall of a drum blank, while the cam continues to urge the wedge-shaped elements of the second die radially outwardly.
