  • Patent number: 6003008
Abstract: A point of sale device (20) is provided comprising a base unit (22) and a cover unit (34) connected to one another by a hinge mechanism (38). The base unit has a front surface (24) and an exterior casing (25) which define an interior volume. Transaction appliances, for example, a card reader (26), receivables storage drawer (28), a currency storage drawer (30), and a bar code scanner (32), are mounted in the interior volume and accessible from the front surface of the base unit. The cover unit includes a display screen (36) mounted on one side. The cover unit can be moved between a closed configuration and an open configuration. In the closed configuration, the cover unit is positioned with the display screen facing and directly in front of the front surface of the base unit such that the display screen is not visible and access to the transaction appliances in the base unit is blocked by the cover unit. In the open configuration, the user can access the display screen and the transaction appliances.
