  • Patent number: 4085246
Abstract: A simulated granite and its preparation are provided. The granite comprises (A) about 35 to 95% by volume of a matrix consisting essentially of (1) at least 34% by volume of polymer, preferably predominantly an acrylic polymer, having a refractive index (n.sub.D) between 1.4 and 1.65 and (2) about 1 to 50% by volume of at least one microscopic filler having an amorphous or mean crystalline axial refractive index between 1.4 and 1.65, (B) about 0.1 to 50% by volume of macroscopic opaque particles having an optical density to visible light greater than 2.0 and (C) about 0.1 to 50% by volume of macroscopic translucent and/or transparent particles having an optical density to visible light less than 2.0; in such a ratio of (A) to (B) to (C) that the optical density to visible light of a 0.05 inch thick wafer of the total composite is less than 3.0.
