Publication number: 20080178895Abstract: Smoke constituent reduction is achieved by resolving from puff-to-puff analysis at which location along a tobacco rod production of a particular smoke constituent is maximized, and locally applying an attenuator at said resolved location to reduce production of the constituent. A remainder of the rod is left untreated so as to minimize impact on taste and burn characteristics of the cigarette. Reduction of the first puff formaldehyde formation is achieved by treating the cigarette tip with salts, using Burley tobacco in the tip, increasing the rod density, ventilation at the tip, and thermal treatment of the tip. Other classes of smoke constituents such as TSNAs (tobacco specific nitrosamines), PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), etc., in particular the PAHs of naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene, flouranthene and benzo(a)pyrene may be reduced with placement of a carbon-based and/or metallic disc at the tip and with practices of the invention herein.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2008Publication date: July 31, 2008Applicant: Philip Morris USA Inc.Inventors: Kenneth Shafer, San Li, Milton Parrish, Susan Plunkett

Publication number: 20060231113Abstract: A filter component includes a catalyst surrounded by a thermally insulative carbon fiber composite. The catalyst can catalyze the chemical reaction of selected gaseous constituents of a gas stream. During catalysis, the catalyst can reach high temperatures. The carbon fiber composite can contain heat generated during the catalysis within the filter component and thereby reduce heat transfer to the surroundings. The filter component can be used in smoking articles. Methods of making and using the filter-component and methods for treating mainstream tobacco smoke are also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2005Publication date: October 19, 2006Inventors: Piers Newbery, Antonis Tsakotellis, Susan Plunkett, Kenneth Shafer

Publication number: 20060207620Abstract: Filters and smoking articles include at least one carbon fiber composite molecular sieve sorbent capable of selectively removing one or more selected constituents from mainstream smoke. Methods for making cigarette filters and smoking articles using the carbon fiber composite molecular sieve sorbent and methods for treating mainstream tobacco smoke in a cigarette comprising the carbon fiber composite molecular sieve sorbent are also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2005Publication date: September 21, 2006Inventors: Susan Plunkett, Kenneth Shafer

Publication number: 20060086367Abstract: Tobacco smoking mixtures capable of producing tobacco smoke are provided which reduce the cytotoxicity and/or mutagenicity of the tobacco smoke. The tobacco smoking mixtures include tobacco cut filler and glycerin in an amount effective to reduce cytotoxicity and/or mutagenicity of smoke produced by the tobacco smoking mixture. The tobacco smoking mixtures enable a further reduction in cytotoxicity and/or mutagenicity when glycerin is combined with palladium or salts of calcium and/or magnesium.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 19, 2005Publication date: April 27, 2006Inventors: San Li, Raquel Olegario, Joseph Banyasz, Kenneth Shafer

Publication number: 20050061338Abstract: Methods for treating tobacco which result in the reduction of selected compounds from the tobacco smoke, and corresponding smoking articles containing this treated tobacco, are disclosed. In these methods, a solution containing a palladium salt is applied to the tobacco, preferably by spraying. The palladium salt preferably contains nitrate, chloride, acetate, citrate, gluconate, or salicylate as the anion. After application of the solution, the tobacco is preferably dried in an oven, by forced air, or by natural evaporation. The palladium in the treated tobacco results in the reduction in the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, especially benzo(a)pyrene, from the total particulate matter in mainstream and sidestream smoke of the treated tobacco. The addition of mannitol and/or urea to the tobacco, and introduction of ventilation in a cigarette containing the treated tobacco, enhance the ability of palladium to reduce the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the smoke.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2004Publication date: March 24, 2005Inventors: Raquel Olegario, San Li, Joseph Banyasz, Kenneth Shafer
