Patent number: 5348075Abstract: In the manufacture of thin metal slab, a workpiece is cast in a continuous casting mould but, while still connected to the part within the mould, the workpiece is treated differently across its width to produce slab of a different width from the east workpiece and of uniform cross-section. The treatment may be rolling or forging.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1993Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Davy (Distington) LimitedInventors: Robert M. Perry, Timothy Reynolds, Thomas Hope, Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 5150599Abstract: A pressing machine for reducing the width of a hot metal slab has a pair of platens which are caused to engage with opposite edges of the slab to apply forces which reduce the width of the slab. This pressing action may cause buckling of the slab and to prevent, or at least reduce, the buckling, one or both of the opposite faces of the slab has a restraint provided adjacent thereto. The restraint may be in two parts connected to respective platens and arranged to allow for movement of one platen with respect to the other platen.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1991Date of Patent: September 29, 1992Assignee: Davy Mckee (Sheffield) LimitedInventors: Geoffrey Wilson, Timothy J. Bradshaw, Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 5018377Abstract: When hot rolling metal strip, it is usual to apply tension to the strip and then a contact-type strip tension detector is employed to detect variations in tension across the width of the strip. The signals are used to adjust the rolling mill in the sense to reduce shape variations across the width substantially to zero. Until tension has been applied to the leading end of the strip, the contact-type detector cannot be used. Consequently, the strip may be of bad shape. The invention resides in employing a non-contact type strip shape detector to detect variation in shape and adjust the rolling mill until tension has been applied to the strip.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1989Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignee: Dave McKee (Sheffield) LimitedInventor: Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 4809528Abstract: A multi-stand hot strip rolling mill has a pinch roll assembly downstream of the last stand and before the coiler and a shapemeter roll is located between the last stand and the pinch roll assembly so as to engage with the strip.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1987Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Assignee: Davy McKee (Sheffield) LimitedInventors: Kenneth T. Lawson, Thomas Hope

Patent number: 4773245Abstract: In an arrangement for coiling metal strip on a downcoiler, the strip is directed to the downcoiler by a pair of pinch rolls and one or both of the rolls are used to steer the strip to a desired position on the mandrel so that a coil with tidy vertical sides is formed on the mandrel. One roll of the pair of pinch rolls may be skewed with respect to the other roll or both rolls may be skewed to the direction of travel of the strip material.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: Davy McKee (Sheffield) LimitedInventors: Kenneth T. Lawson, Bela I. Bathory

Patent number: 4610144Abstract: When cooling hot metal strip, it is known to employ headers which apply continuous curtains of water across the width of the strip. The headers above the strip are inclined to each other so that the curtains extend across the width of the strip and are spaced apart horizontally by a greater distance at one edge of the strip than at the other edge.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1985Date of Patent: September 9, 1986Assignee: Davy McKee (Sheffield) LimitedInventor: Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 4475422Abstract: A method and device for slitting or edge trimming strip material on a process line are described in which trimming knives 2 mounted on a base 3 which is pivotally mounted on a sub-base 4, trim the edges of strip 14. The lateral position of the strip is sensed by sensors 10 and the position of the strip relative to center line of the process line is determined by a computer (not shown) which controls the lateral movement of the sub-base 4 by a hydraulic jack 9 so as to keep the strip and trimmer in alignment. The speed V of the strip is sensed and the speed V.sub.T of the trimmer is sensed by a transducer 12. The base 3 and thus each pair of knives 2 is pivoted about a pivot 11 on the sub-base 4 so that the angle .alpha. the knives make with the center line of the process, tends to equal tan .sup.31 1 (V.sub.T/V).Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1983Date of Patent: October 9, 1984Assignee: Davy McKee (Poole) Ltd.Inventor: Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 4470555Abstract: A method and apparatus for winding strip material is described in which strip which has partially severed scrap edge portions still frangibly attached thereto, is wound on to a coil or mandrel so that the cut edges of the strip are aligned. The strip passes past trimming knives which partially sever the edge portion and sensors measure the lateral position T of the knife and the lateral position E of the uncut edge of the edge portion adjacent to the knife position A. The scrap width T--E is then recorded. As the strip is about to be wound on to the coil at position B the lateral position R of uncut edge of scrap portion is sensed by a sensor. The appropriate scrap width is then determined by reference to the recorded scrap width and the strip travel between points A and B which is determined from a tachometer attached to a roll over which the strip passes.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1983Date of Patent: September 11, 1984Assignee: Davy McKee (Poole) Ltd.Inventor: Kenneth T. Lawson

Patent number: 4358978Abstract: Edge trimming apparatus and method for trimming off wavy edges of strip material, e.g. metal strip, wherein rotary trimming knives for each edge of the strip are movable transversely relative to the advancing strip. The knives are pivotally supported about vertical axis and can have their transverse spacing adjusted, the support blocks preferably being transversely slidable in guides which are mounted on a carriage which itself is transversely movable relative to the advancing strip. Edge sensors are located adjacent edge regions of the strip and signals from the sensors are passed to a device, for example a hydraulic jack, for moving the carriage transversely.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1980Date of Patent: November 16, 1982Assignee: The Head Wrightson Machine Co. Ltd.Inventor: Kenneth T. Lawson
