Patent number: 6466793Abstract: A frequency allocation system automatically allocates which of select radio frequencies are to be used for wireless communication systems in a wireless office system having a plurality of transceivers using a pool of select radio frequencies. The system determines an interference level for each radio frequency. Radio frequencies having an interference level above a select threshold are abandoned. Remaining usable radio frequencies having the lowest interference levels are selected as allocated frequencies to be used as a pooled resource by any of the plurality of transceivers.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1999Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Yngve Kenneth Wallstedt, Lisa M. Patent number: 6453156Abstract: A method for use in a receiver in a time division multiple access (TDMA) wireless communication system to determine whether a channel is occupied and whether the transmitter occupying the channel is internal or external to the system. The method comprises the steps of receiving a signal, on a channel determining that the channel is unoccupied when the signal strength of the channel signal is below a threshold, determining that the transmitter is internal to the system when the received signal is highly correlated to a signal that is known to contain the proper predefined field.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1998Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Stephen Douglas Center, Yngve Kenneth Wallstedt

Patent number: 6418313Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for tracking of a private communication system allowing operation of a mobile terminal with both a public communication system and the private communication system even when the private communication system retunes its control channel while not in communication with the mobile terminal. This automatic selection of the new control channel for the private communication system is provided by communication of both the current control channel frequency and one or more candidate control channel frequencies which will be used in turn by the private radio communication system in retunes. These candidate frequencies are originally provided to the mobile terminal, for example, when it first establishes a connection with the private communication system. The candidate control channel frequency information is updated during periods when the mobile terminal is connected to the private communication system.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1998Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventor: Kenneth Wallstedt

Patent number: 6347217Abstract: Method and systems for reporting and analyzing link quality for radiocommunications are described. Use of frame erasure information (e.g., frame erasure rate (FER)) is highlighted. Presentation of frame erasure information can be segregated on a per-connection or per-cell basis, in addition to system-wide output. Moreover, frame erasure information can be correlated with geographical location of a mobile, the mobile's handover status or the equipment type of the mobile station to provide the network operator with a better understanding of quality issues within the network.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1997Date of Patent: February 12, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Karin Agneta Bengtsson, HÃ¥kan Gunnar Olofsson, Yngve Kenneth Wallstedt, Erik Ekudden

Patent number: 6330450Abstract: A system and method for minimizing effects of both internal and external transmitter noise in order to improve control decisions that are based on signal strength measurements. A wireless network includes an internal transmitter transmitting a first signal at a first frequency and noise at other frequencies in a known pattern. The signal strength of the first signal is measured by the receiver at the first frequency. The noise of the transmitter of the first signal is calculated on other frequencies, using the first transmitter's known noise pattern. A determination is then made whether the noise of the first signal is above a threshold on one or more of the other frequencies used by the wireless communication system. If the noise is above the threshold, corrective action is taken. The wireless network further includes one or more receivers that measure signal strengths on the range of frequencies used by the system.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1999Date of Patent: December 11, 2001Assignee: Ericsson, Inc.Inventors: Kenneth Wallstedt, Torbjorn Ward

Patent number: 6301478Abstract: A method of reducing interference in a cellular radio communication including performing a courtesy handover of a first call to another channel to reduce interference in a second call when the presence of the first call on the same frequency as the second call causes the interference in the second call. Also, a method of setting up a call which permits a retry to a macro cell when a channel of sufficient quality is not found in a micro cell.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1993Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Yngve Kenneth Wallstedt, Knut Magnus Almgren, Claes Hakan Andersson

Patent number: 6108550Abstract: The present invention relates to the reuse of a control channel in a distributed cellular radio communication system. At least one physical channel, the so called physical control channel, in the radio communication system is used for transferring logical control channels. According to the present invention the physical uplink control channel can be reused with respect to logical control channels comprising an access request. The physical downlink control channel can be reused with respect to logical control channels comprising a message that access is granted to a mobile station or a message that someone requests contact with a mobile station. According to the invention the physical uplink control channel and/or the physical downlink control channel is reused. This means that more connections per time unit may be established in the radio communication system.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1998Date of Patent: August 22, 2000Assignee: Telefonaktienbolaget LM EricssonInventors: Jonas Wiorek, Magnus Frodigh, Per Beming, Kenneth Wallstedt

Patent number: 5903834Abstract: A communication network, and associated method, permitting wireless communication with a mobile unit in an indoor environment. Transceivers are positioned at spaced-apart locations and are coupled to a centralized, control device. The transceivers include transmitter portions and wideband receiver portions. Uplink signals transmitted by a mobile unit are received by receiver portions of transceivers within the range of the uplink signal. Downlink signals are generated by at least two transmitter portions of at least two transceivers. The control device controls selection of which transmitter portions and which receiver portions of the plurality of transceivers are utilized to effectuate two-way communication with the mobile unit.
