  • Patent number: 7089088
Abstract: An integrated HVACR control and protection system includes a modular and reprogrammable design providing a plurality of possible combinations of power detection, voltage detection, run current detection, transient current detection, temperature detection, universal thermostat interface, peripheral or remote control, and local display and control. The control and protection system is capable of evaluating the relationship between real power used by an HVACR system compressor and other system operating parameters to detect problems early in the failure cycle, i.e., before a failure has progressed to requiring a system shutdown or causing damage to other components. Additionally, a control system and method provide sensorless detection of various HVACR system faults, such as, for example, loss of refrigerant or a refrigerant flow restriction, that impact the relationship between real power and current, voltage, temperature, or other operating parameters.

  • Publication number: 20040021994
Abstract: A hermetic compressor is disclosed having an electric motor, a compressor unit, and an overload protector within a hermetically sealed housing. The overload protector includes a thermally activated switching device for selectively providing current to the electric motor, a heater element thermally coupled to the switching device, and a control circuit controlling the heater element. The overload protector allows the disconnection of power to the motor due to factors and conditions specified in the remotely located control circuit.

  • Patent number: 6341497
Abstract: The present invention involves a reversible, dual capacity compressor system. The compressor systems includes a reversible compressor, a pressure sensor, and a control assembly. The reversible compressor operates at a first capacity when the compressor rotates in a first direction and at a second and lesser capacity when the compressor rotates in a second direction. The pressure sensor is coupled to the compressor and generates a high pressure signal and a low pressure signal. The control assembly is coupled to the compressor and the pressure sensor and controls the compressor to rotate in the first direction when receiving a high pressure signal from the pressure sensor and to rotate in the second direction when receiving a low pressure signal from the pressure sensor.

  • Patent number: 6276901
Abstract: A combination sight glass and optical sensor is provided in the housing of a hermetic compressor to provide effective visual inspection in addition to automatic sensing of the level of oil in an oil sump. A sight glass fitting is provided in the housing and has a first portion that extends outwardly from the housing and that is accessible from outside the compressor. An optical oil level sensing device is removably attached to the first portion of the sight glass with electrical leads extending outside the compressor for connection to a compressor controller. A prism or similar device is attached to the sight glass fitting intermediate the sump oil and the optical sensor. The sensing device includes a light source, a photosensitive detector, and an opaque member to prevent cross coupling between the light source and the detector.
