  • Patent number: 6808080
Abstract: An apparatus designed to automatically latch and unlatch the lid of a container. The apparatus includes a weight pivotally mounted on the side of the container for movement between first and second positions. The weight is positively connected to a latch by a connecting rod, and as the weight pivots between first and second positions, it moves the latch between latching and unlatching positions. Tipping the container causes the weight to shift thus the container is unlatched only when it is being dumped. A method for operating the latch is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5788003
Abstract: An electrically powered vehicle is disclosed which includes at least one wheel assembly, an axle assembly, a linearly reciprocating piston member, and an internal combustion engine for causing linear movement of the piston member for generating electric power. Electric power generated by the linear reciprocating motion of the piston including a coil within an annular magnetic member is used to drive a wheel assembly by way of an electric motor thereby driving the vehicle. In certain embodiments, the piston is caused to reciprocate linearly by a pair of combustion chambers which operate in an alternating fashion thereby causing current to be output via the coil. The invention allows for a highly flexible vehicle design which results in improved fuel efficiency, increased power, less weight, and improved travel ranges in an electrically powered vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5575201
Abstract: A compactor assembly comprises a ground supported housing having an open top through which waste material is deposited. An auger is rotatable on an axis positioned within the housing for breaking waste material received therein through the open top, and for transporting the waste material therethrough. A drop area is downstream of the receiving chamber of the housing and has a remote open portion. A compactor ram is reciprocal on an axis parallel to the auger axis for transferring waste material through the open portion. A first drive is operably associated with the auger for rotating the auger, and a second drive is operably associated with the compactor ram for causing reciprocation thereof.

  • Patent number: 5330307
Abstract: A container for compacting refuse is provided. The compacting container is mounted transversely to the elongated bed of a refuse collection vehicle. Refuse is deposited into the compacting container through a first refuse inlet located in a first end of the compacting container along one side of the truck and through a second refuse inlet located in the top of the compacting container via a pivotally mounted basket located on the second end of the container and which is operated by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. The compacting container is discharged through a pivotally mounted door located on the same end of the container as the basket. An automatic latch keeps the door closed during compaction of the refuse.

  • Patent number: 5178062
Abstract: A preferred embodiment of the present invention is directed to a compactor for compacting waste materials. The compactor includes a compression unit for receiving and compressing waste materials and a power unit detachably connected thereto. The compression unit includes a ram and a pair of piston and cylinder assemblies. The power control unit activates the piston and cylinder assemblies to move the ram between an operating position and a storage position. A support bracket slideably connects the power control unit to the compression unit permitting an individual to readily access the power control unit to service the same. The support bracket extends from the left side wall to the right side wall of the compression unit thereby permitting an individual to attach the power control unit to either the left side or right side of the compression unit.

  • Patent number: 5044271
Abstract: An improved manually fed waste baling compactor has a single interlock switch which controls movement of a vertically oriented ram and platen such that the ram cannot move unless both a chamber door and a guard door of the mechanism are properly positioned. A magnetic interlock prevents opening the guard door manually until after the compression and retraction stroke of the ram.

  • Patent number: 5025721
Abstract: This invention is a lock-in device for a trash compactor assembly including a stationary compacting head and support, and a movable container spaced subjacent the compacting head for containing compacted trash. The lock-in device retains the movable container in fixed relation to the vertical compacting head by the action of first and second interlocking members, wherein when the container is locked in position subjacent the compactor the first member can engage with the second member to prevent the container from moving horizontally relative to the compacting head when compacting is taking place. The lock-in device includes first and second members formed of flat plates bent along their longitudinal length to form angled sections and are jointed to the compaction assembly so that they are engageable to prevent horizontal movement of the container relative to the compactor head.

  • Patent number: 4860646
Abstract: A compactor includes a longitudinally extending ground supported frame having an open end and a closed end. A cylinder and piston assembly is positioned within the frame and extends longitudinally therealong and a ram is secured to the piston for transferring waste through the open end. The cylinder has fluid ports at opposite ends thereof. An hydraulic fluid supply assembly introduces pressurized fluid to said ports for causing selective movement of the piston relative to the cylinder. An hydraulic spool valve is carried by the piston for permitting fluid to flow between the ports and for thereby preventing displacement of the piston when the dwell assembly engages one of the ends.

  • Patent number: 4817520
Abstract: An offset compactor assembly includes an elongated chamber having a waste receiving end portion and a waste discharge end. A ram is displaceable therein for causing compaction of waste during transfer therebetween. A first cylinder and piston assembly is operably connected to the ram for causing displacement thereof. A gate is positioned proximate said end and is movable into and out of said chamber for selectively restricting said chamber and thereby controlling the passage of waste therethrough. A second cylinder and piston assembly is operably connected to the gate for causing displacement thereof. An hydraulic control operably interconnects the first and second cylinder and piston assemblies for causing offsetting operation thereof so that the waste compacted in the chamber has a substantially uniform density.
