Abstract: A medical imaging device and apparatus (4) having an x-ray detector (10) formed of a plurality of semiconductor pixel detectors (12), each having an associated electric circuit (15) and counter (68, FIG. 5B). In use, a subject disposed between an x-ray generator (2, FIG. 1) and the x-ray detector (10), and is irradiated and the x-rays incident upon the pixel detectors (12) are directly converted into a corresponding electrical signal which is digitised by the electric circuit (15) and counted by the counter (68). These digitised electrical signals represent the energy and incidence position of the absorbed x-rays and can be manipulated to provide an image representative of the x-rayed subject. The image may be such that visual analysis may be performed in real time.
