  • Patent number: 8527404
Abstract: Tools for adjusting a debit transaction, which can allow a payee to adjust the amount of the transaction without having to provide cash back to the payor. Instead, the refund amount may be applied as a credit against the debit transaction. In an aspect, the credit may be for any amount up to the original amount of the check (less any credit already applied). Optionally, one or more security and/or anti-fraud measures may be implemented, e.g., ensuring that the check is not subject to a collection proceeding and/or ensuring that the requested credit is not more than the amount of the check itself).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 1, 2008
Date of Patent: September 3, 2013
    Assignee: First Data Corporation
Inventors: Kerry A. Sellen, Christopher A. Schmid
  • Patent number: 7731087
Abstract: Systems and methods for electronically processing financial transactions involving corporate checks. A front end device at a location associated with a merchant and a check processing service configured to detect and process corporate checks. In one embodiment, the detection of the corporate check is achieved at the front end device by reading of an auxiliary on-us field in the check's magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) line. Such information denoting the check as a corporate check is used by the check processing service to at least partially base its assessment of whether to approve and process the corporate check electronically.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 30, 2003
Date of Patent: June 8, 2010
    Assignee: First Data Corporation
    Inventors: Kerry Sellen, Cheryl Phillips

  • Publication number: 20080086419
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide methods and systems for handling a check submitted in a transaction. According to one embodiment, a method for handling a check submitted in a transaction can comprise requesting authorization of the transaction from a check processing device based on information from the check and other possible information. For example, authorizing the transaction can comprise requesting authorization of the transaction by an authorization service from the check processing device. In response to the authorization service authorizing the transaction, a notification of the transaction can be received from the check processing device. Image data representing an image of the check can also be received. A reconciliation process can be performed based on the notification and the image data.

  • Publication number: 20040236692
Abstract: The routing of monetary funds may be achieved via electronic check conversion technology where paper drafted checks are converted to an electronic format. A particular financial institution due to unrecognizable identification information submitted with the electronic check may reject electronic checks. Most merchant related businesses, including check approval agencies, fail to pre-process electronic checks to avoid likely rejections from the financial institutions. The present teachings relates to a method of preprocessing various electronic payments to determine the most efficient routing of funds available.
