Publication number: 20120023936Abstract: A turbine includes a turbine housing (215) including at least two gas passages (236) having substantially the same flow area and disposed on either side of at least one divider wall (240). A turbine wheel (212) includes a plurality of blades (214). A nozzle ring (238) is connected to the turbine housing (215) and disposed around the turbine wheel. The nozzle ring (238) includes an inner ring (242) disposed adjacent the divider wall (240) and at least one outer ring (238). A plurality of vanes (246) is fixedly disposed between the inner and outer rings. The vanes define a plurality of inlet openings (258) therebetween that are in fluid communication with a slot (230) formed in the ring and surrounding the turbine wheel (212). The inner ring (242) is disposed to block a portion of the inlet openings (258) that fluidly communicate with one of the at least two gas passages (236) in the turbine housing (215).Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2011Publication date: February 2, 2012Applicant: CATERPILLAR INC.Inventors: RICHARD W. Publication number: 20080104956Abstract: A turbocharger for a power system is disclosed. The turbocharger has an impeller wheel, which is rotatable about a central axis and includes a back face at least partially defining a reference plane substantially perpendicular to the central axis. In addition, the turbocharger includes a housing configured to at least partially enclose the impeller wheel. The housing also has at least one volute configured to fluidly communicate fluid with the impeller wheel. The entire length of the at least one volute from a turbocharger inlet is axially inclined relative to the reference plane so the fluid flows in both a radial and axial direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2006Publication date: May 8, 2008Inventors: Kerry A. Delvecchio, Richard W. Kruiswyk, Paul W. Reisdorf, Anees Hafiz

Patent number: 5676100Abstract: A glow plug assembly having a shield integrally connected to a housing is disposed in and retained in a bore in a cylinder head by a clamp connected to the cylinder head. A stop surface connected to said housing is engageable with the cylinder head and establishes the location of a heating element second end in the combustion chamber. The clamp maintains the stop against the head and the orientation of the shield angled second end relative to the combustion chamber. The heating element is connected to the housing by a spacer and the housing is sealed with a filler material which blocks the transfer of fluid through the housing. The filler material maintains the housing from passing fluid between the first and second housing ends, minimizes the vibration of the electrical conductors and conducts the heat out of the glow plug.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 14, 1997Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Chuong Q. Dam, Kerry A. DelVecchio, Robert L. Miller, Kenneth J. Suda
