  • Patent number: 10515663
Abstract: A determination is made whether read/write is enabled within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that read/write is enabled, a determination is made whether a temperature within the tape drive storage unit exceeds a threshold value. In response to determining that the temperature within the tape drive storage unit exceeds the threshold value, a determination is made of a direction of travel of a tape media within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that the direction of travel is a forward direction, a first cooling device is powered on. The first cooling device lowers the temperature of a first guide roller and the tape media coming off a first tape storage reel prior to the tape media passing by a read/write head within the tape drive storage unit.

  • Patent number: 10460757
Abstract: A method for characterizing a magnetic recording tape of a tape cartridge, according to one approach, includes measuring, using a magnetic head having servo readers of known pitch, a servo band difference at various locations along a length of a magnetic recording tape of a tape cartridge. The servo band difference measurements and/or derivatives thereof are stored in association with the tape cartridge. This procedure creates a characterization of the magnetic recording tape that is useful for assessing aging of the magnetic recording tape, as well as improving subsequent reading and/or writing operations.

  • Publication number: 20190325910
Abstract: A tape drive-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: detecting a read error, and sending one or more instructions to perform a first re-read attempt on a portion of a magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. In response to determining that the first re-read attempt was unsuccessful, a range of tension settings is selected. A range of lateral offsets is also selected. Moreover, one or more instructions are sent to apply each unique combination of a tension setting from the range of tension settings and a lateral offset from the range of lateral offsets. For each of the unique combinations applied, one or more instructions are sent to perform a second phase re-read attempt on the portion of the magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. Furthermore, a determination is made as to whether the second phase re-read attempt was performed successfully for any of the unique combinations.

  • Patent number: 10410670
Abstract: A determination is made whether read/write is enabled within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that read/write is enabled, a determination is made whether an absolute value of a channel offset exceeds a threshold value. In response to determining that the absolute value of the channel offset exceeds a threshold value, a direction of travel of the tape media is determined. In response to determining that the direction of travel of the tape media is a forward direction, a determination is made whether the channel offset is positive. In response to determining that the channel offset is positive, a left cooling device within the tape drive storage unit is powered on. • Patent number: 10366716
Abstract: In one general embodiment, a method includes applying a static head skew to a magnetic tape head, positioning the first reader at a first y-position relative to a servo pattern in a servo band, measuring y-positions of the second reader relative to the servo pattern in the servo band while the first reader is at the first y-position, and averaging the measured y-positions. The method further includes repeating the following process several times: moving the first reader to a next y-position, measuring y-positions of the second reader while the first reader is at the next y-position, and averaging the y-positions measured by the second reader while the first reader is at the next y-position. The method further includes calculating a unique nonlinearity value of the servo pattern in the servo band for each of the average y-position values, and storing and/or outputting the calculated nonlinearity values.

  • Patent number: 10297280
Abstract: A method according to one embodiment includes generating a y-position estimate based on a servo readback signal from a servo reader reading a servo band, retrieving or calculating a nonlinearity-correction value corresponding to the y-position estimate, adjusting the y-position estimate using the nonlinearity-correction value, and outputting the adjusted y-position estimate. A computer program product for compensating for nonlinearity in a timing based servo pattern according to one embodiment includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The computer readable storage medium is not a transitory signal per se. The program instructions are readable and/or executable by a controller to cause the controller to perform the foregoing method.

  • Patent number: 10242703
Abstract: A computer-implemented method includes: determining a reading performance of a head at a commanded lateral reading location; adjusting a location of the head relative to a medium by moving the head in a first lateral direction to an adjusted lateral reading location; determining a reading performance of the head at the adjusted lateral reading location, and determining whether the reading performance at the adjusted lateral reading location is better than the reading performance at the commanded lateral reading location. In response to determining the reading performance is better at the adjusted reading location, the method includes iteratively repeating the adjustment of the location of the head until the reading performance of the head at a current iteration is worse than the reading performance of the head at an immediately previous iteration.
