Patent number: 8237625Abstract: In one embodiment, a multimedia control and distribution architecture is provided. A media server/controller generates a plurality of graphics signals, each graphics signal including a separate user interface to be displayed on a particular device, such as a touch screen unit. A universal extender (UVX) coupled to the media server/controller converts and extends the graphics signals for transmission on a plurality of universal transmission pathways. Each of the plurality of devices receives a graphic signal passed thereto, displays graphics embodied in the graphics signals, and accept user input in response to the graphics signal. For example, the one or more touch screen units may accept a user touch and pass a location of the user touch back on a universal transmission pathway to the UVX, for transmission to the media server/controller. The media server/controller generates control commands and provides the control commands.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2008Date of Patent: August 7, 2012Assignee: Savant Systems, LLCInventors: Robert P. Madonna, James F. Allen, Peter Bennett, David M. Benvenuti, Kevin C. Kicklighter

Patent number: 8199113Abstract: Both an on screen display and a physical programmable remote control have buttons whose functionality may be dynamically reassigned in accordance with a user's navigation through menu levels, states or across different services. The physical programmable remote control, in conjunction with a TV or other video display, provides an intuitive, heads up experience for the user and eliminates the need for multiple physical remote controls. User profiles and zones may be used to customize a user's remote control functionality based on preferences, access controls, location and the like.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2007Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Savant Systems, LLCInventors: Robert P. Publication number: 20110167348Abstract: In one embodiment, a component library stores representations of audio/video components, the representations of audio/video components corresponding to physical audio/video components that are available for inclusion in a system. A configuration workspace is provided into which a selected plurality of representations of audio/video components from the component library are placed to indicate their inclusion in the system. A drawing tool may be used to draw connections between particular ones of the selected plurality of audio/video components in the configuration workspace. Further, a configuration compiler may determine one or more realized services that the system is capable of providing based on the selected plurality of audio/video components and the drawn connections between particular ones of the selected plurality of audio/video components, and may display to the user indications of the one or more realized services that the system is capable of providing.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 7, 2011Publication date: July 7, 2011Applicant: SAVANT SYSTEMS, LLCInventors: Michael C. Silva, Robert P. Madonna, Kevin C. Kicklighter, Bryan S. Bonczek, David M. Benvenuti, Arthur A. Jacobson, Nicholas Cipollo, Gerald W. Shields

Patent number: 7930644Abstract: A multimedia controller, based on a general purpose computer, which is capable of interfacing with, controlling or managing a wide variety of audio, video, telecommunications, data communications or other devices. A configuration tool, based on a graphical user interface, provides a simple, schematic way to configure even highly complex systems having numerous components or devices which are to be interconnected with or interfaced to the multimedia controller. A user interface programming tool enables a user to customize the appearance and functionality of a graphical user interface to the multimedia controller. A metadata manager automatically collects metadata that is available within the multimedia controller, automatically detects the presence of new media and collects metadata from it, and may also access web resources to locate additional pertinent metadata.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2006Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Savant Systems, LLCInventors: Michael C. Patent number: 6701131Abstract: A call progress analysis system is provided which is generic to any telecommunications system with which it is used due to configurable detection parameters. A signal on a channel of the telecommunications system is detected in intervals of changing frequency composition and compared to stored pattern descriptors, each of which defines a different call progress signal. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a frequency mask is computed that is specific to a user-defined call progress analysis class. This frequency mask is used to make the DSP receiver ignore frequencies that are not part of any call progress pattern in a particular class. The frequency mask can be used in a frequency detection mode or an energy detection mode. In either mode, the detector can be customized for each channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2001Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Excel Switching CorporationInventors: Kevin C. Patent number: 6005841Abstract: A redundancy arrangement for use in connection with a programmable telecommunications switch or other device. An active hardware device, such as an ISDN packet engine card, is paired with a substantially identically configured standby device. During operation, the active device, in addition to performing all of its normal functions, also advises the standby device of all events which have an effect on the operational state of the active device. By ensuring that the standby device processes the same events in the same sequence as the active device, the standby device's operational state continuously tracks that of the active device. Should the active device malfunction or be taken out of service, the standby device becomes active without significant interruption or loss of service.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1997Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Excel Switching CorporationInventor: Kevin C. Patent number: 5349579Abstract: A telecommunications switch which may be configured to provide a variety of user-programmable communications or call processing services. Such services may be dynamically provided to any port served by the switch without reducing the number of time slots that would otherwise be available for calls. The switch includes a CPU/matrix card, one or more line cards for terminating analog or digital lines or trunks, and one or more programmable communications services cards, all of which are connected in communicating relationship by a series of buses. Each communications services card is independently programmable and includes a processor for processing messages received from the CPU/matrix card. The communications services card provides a basic platform onto which different types of modules may be mounted to meet the requirements of a particular application.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1993Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Excel, Inc.Inventors: Robert P.
