Abstract: An apparatus and system are provided for simultaneously analyzing a plurality of analytes anchored to microparticles. Microparticles each having a uniform population of a single kind of analyte attached are disposed as a substantially immobilized planar array inside of a flow chamber where steps of an analytical process are carried out by delivering a sequence of processing reagents to the microparticles by a fluidic system under microprocessor control. In response to such process steps, an optical signal is generated at the surface of each microparticle which is characteristic of the interaction between the analyte carried by the microparticle and the delivered processing reagent. The plurality of analytes are simultaneously analyzed by collecting and recording images of the optical signals generated by all the microparticles in the planar array.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for organizing and loading orthodontic appliances, for example orthodontic brackets, onto set-up trays. The system includes an organizer tray which holds a set-up tray in a fixed orientation, and also holds a plurality of packages of orthodontic brackets in predetermined relationships to bracket staging areas on the set-up tray. Bracket packages and the organizer tray are configured so that the brackets are presented in the same orientation, when in their packages held by the organizer tray, as they will have when transferred to the set-up tray. As a result, the brackets can be loaded onto the set-up tray from the packages without re-orientation. The organizer tray has a storage base that holds supplies of packages of the different brackets of a given set so that the organizer tray can be reloaded with packages. Preferred organizer tray and package configurations are also provided.

Abstract: An orthodontic hook device for use with an implant secured to a first location on the dental arch of a patient generally comprises a base member configured to be slidably received on an archwire secured to the dental arch and a hook member extending from an outer surface of the base member. The hook member includes a first edge and a second edge, which have different profiles and are spaced apart to provide the hook member with a thickness. The second edge defines at least one notch configured to retain an end of a biasing member, which includes an opposite end secured to the implant.

Abstract: A disclosed method determines fluid pressure inside a vessel without compromising the integrity of the vessel. A sensor is positioned in operative communication with the external wall of the vessel such that expansion of the external wall of the vessel exerts a force against the sensor that is directed substantially radially outward with respect to the vessel. A substantially radially inward force is caused to be directed against the sensor in response to the substantially radially outward force exerted by the external vessel wall. The sensor can thus be used to detect the magnitude of the substantially radially outward force. A disclosed apparatus determines fluid pressure inside a vessel without compromising the integrity of the vessel. The apparatus includes a sensor and a band operatively associated with the sensor and configured to at least partially encircle the vessel so as to retain the sensor in operative communication against the external wall of the vessel.

Abstract: A method for measuring pressure within a heart includes the steps of: (1) providing a passive wireless pressure sensor having a characteristic impedance and a deflectable surface, the characteristic impedance changing in response to deflection of the deflectable surface; (2) inserting the sensor to a location within the body of a patient at which the sensor can detect pressure within the heart; (3) affixing the sensor relative to the heart; (4) interrogating the sensor with an electromagnetic field; (5) receiving a signal from the sensor corresponding to a sensed pressure; and (6) leaving the sensor in situ so that future pressure measurements can be made.

Abstract: The repeater of the present invention communicates data signals over power lines. The repeater of one embodiment includes at least one modem that receives a data packet and attempts to decrypt the data packet with a first and/or second encryption key. If the packet is successfully decrypted using the first encryption key, the packet is encrypted using the second encryption and transmitted over the power line. If the packet is successfully decrypted using the second encryption key, the packet is encrypted using the first encryption and transmitted over the power line.

Abstract: A device and method for communicating user data and utility metrology data over a power line is provided. In one embodiment, the method includes measuring a utility parameter to provide the utility data; storing the utility data in memory; transmitting the utility data over the power line; receiving first data via the power line from a first device; and transmitting the first data over the power line to a second device. In addition, the method may include receiving the first data and transmitting the first data with different encryption keys and also determining if the first data includes control data.

Abstract: The invention includes a device and a method for testing a communication network that includes an Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. The inventive device includes a user interface for communicating results of a test, a transceiver for allowing the test device to communicate with a telecommunications network, and a digital signal processor for reformatting a communication signal to be tested by the device. The digital signal processor may include at least one coder/decoder that uses various compression protocols including wherein the digital signal processor uses at least one of the following data compression techniques: G.711a-law, G711?-law, G.720, G.723.1, G.726, G.728, G.729, G.729A, and G.729AB2. The transceiver also may be a power line modem. The inventive device may include a processor, random access memory, read only memory, a user interface, and a network interface.

One embodiment of the system includes a power line communication device comprising a first modem configured to communicate over the one or more external low voltage power lines. The system further includes a plurality of wireless interface devices, each located at, and external to, a respective one of the plurality of customer premises. Each wireless interface device may includes a first communication module configured to communicate with the power line communication device via the external low voltage power line; and a second communication module in communication with the first communication module and configured to provide wireless communications for one or more remote devices within the respective customer premises.

Abstract: Disclosed is a die press cutting system that includes a commercial die press including a working area with a cutting height, a consumer die adapted to be located in the working area of a consumer press with a cutting height smaller than the cutting height of the commercial press, a consumer die having a steel rule height that is custom or specific to the consumer press working area, and an adapter having a thickness or height that is generally approximately equal to the difference between the height of a commercial die and the height of the consumer press die.

Abstract: A dental apparatus for use with a connecting member coupled to a jaw in a patient's mouth. The apparatus includes an orthodontic device and a connecting device carried by the orthodontic device. The connecting device includes a receptacle adapted to partially receive the connecting member and a blocking member. The blocking member is moveable relative to the receptacle between an opened position in which the connecting member may be disengaged from the receptacle and a closed position in which the connecting member is captured within the receptacle for pivotally engaging the orthodontic device with the connecting member. The orthodontic device may further include a biasing member selectively activated to provide a spring-biased force to the jaw. A method of using the dental apparatus includes moving the blocking member to capture/release the connecting member in the receptacle and activating/deactivating the biasing member to operate the apparatus in a different mode.

Abstract: A power line communication system communicating over a medium voltage power line including a VoIP endpoint that transmits voice data and requests to establish a voice connection to a medium voltage (MV) access device is provided. The medium voltage access device may determine a response to the request, allocate voice data packets a higher priority than general data packets, and transmit the data packets over the MV power line according to their priority. The MV access device may provide one or more voice over internet protocol (VoIP) switch functions and, in response to the requests, grant or deny the requests based, for example, on the number of established voice connections.

Abstract: A manually operated portable die cutting machine having a rotatable handle arm for generating a pressure necessary to cut a sheet material that is carried by a die cutting assembly and positioned between a movable upper press plate and a stationary lower press plate. A pull-out drawer is slidable outwardly from the body of the die cutting machine to enable access to a storage compartment thereof in which a variety of small articles can be transported. The rotation of a locking knob causes a corresponding rotation of a swing hook into engagement with the handle arm to prevent a rotation of the handle arm when it is desirable to carry the die cutting machine at the side of a user or to prevent use of the machine by a small child. The handle arm includes a handle having an upturned kick which prevents the user's fingers from being pinched when the handle is grasped to rotate the handle arm.

Abstract: A power line communications system that facilitates the provision of differentiated data services is provided. One embodiment of the present invention may include tagging downstream data at an ingress point, such as a point of presence or aggregation point. The tagging of data packets may allow the power line communication network elements such as backhaul points, bypass devices, and repeaters to determine the data type and class of service of each data packet and may allow the network elements to prioritize, queue and transmit the data packets accordingly. Such queuing may employ the use of multiple queues with some queues having different sizes and different weight factors from other queues.

Abstract: An orthodontic device treats malocclusions using a telescopic rod fixed to a molar on the upper arch and a molar on a lower arch. The telescopic rod lengthens and shortens during opening and closing of the jaw. The telescopic rod encourages the patient to properly position their jaw causing adaptation thereby treating the malocclusions.

Abstract: The combination of a conventional steel rule die for cutting shapes in sheet material and a height adapter to be attached to the top of the die to increase the original height (i.e., thickness) of the die. Accordingly, the combination will be sized so as to fit snugly within a gap in a hand operated die press between a pressing force generator and the sheet material to be cut. By virtue of the addition of the height adapter, the die will lie within the gap in close proximity to the force generator so as to receive a pressing force necessary for properly cutting the sheet material into the desired shape. Positioning guidelines are marked on the top of the height adapter to alert the press operator as to the ideal positions of the combination relative to the pressing force generator of the die press.

Abstract: An orthodontic appliance organizer for organizing and loading orthodontic appliances, for example orthodontic brackets, onto set-up trays. The orthodontic appliance organizer includes an organizer tray for holding a removable set-up tray support member and a corresponding set-up tray in a fixed orientation. The orthodontic appliance organizer also includes a storage component having storage compartments for storing the orthodontic appliances. The storage component is accessible by the user to obtain orthodontic appliances for placing into the organizer tray without moving the organizer tray or the storage component. Additional access to the storage component can be made by rotating a portion of the organizer tray to reload orthodontic appliances. The storage component, organizer tray, set-up tray support member and the orthodontic appliance organizer are stackable upon themselves.

Abstract: Packages for dispensing dental appliances of the type used in corrective orthodontic treatments, methods of using such packages, and methods of manufacturing such packages. The package generally includes a holder and drawers containing the dental appliances that are removable from the package. The characteristics of the dental appliances positioned in each individual drawer are appropriate for application to different quadrants of the patient's teeth. The drawers of the package may be color coded with regions on a setup card so that the dental appliances, while remaining positioned in the drawers, be may be organized among the regions according to the intended quadrants for bracket application. Other color coding schemes are possible involving the drawers, the brackets held by the drawers, the setup card, and the brackets themselves.
