  • Publication number: 20210055093
Abstract: A tool for determining variations in outer diameter of a pipe. The tool may have a pair of contact arms configured for engaging with opposing sides of a pipe. The contact arms may be biased toward one another, and at least one of the arms may be configured to slide toward and away from the other. As the contact arms are moved along an outer surface of a pipe, a distance between the arms may change in response to variations in outer diameter of the pipe. A plunger gauge may be arranged on one of the contact arms with its plunger directed toward the other arm. The plunger may extend or depress in response to a decreased or increased distance between the contact arms. An alignment shoe may align the contact arms with at least X and Z axes of the pipe so as to help ensure accurate pipe measurements.

  • Patent number: 9170089
Abstract: A system and method for measuring a pipe is provided. The system includes a frame rotatably receiving the pipe, a carriage movably positionable along the frame, a guide floatingly positionable about the carriage, at least one sensor for measuring a position of the pipe, and a measurement unit operatively linked to the sensor for collecting measurements therefrom. The guide has a mouth that receivingly engages the pipe and axially aligns therewith. The pipe is measured with the sensor(s) while moving at least one of the pipe, the carriage and the guide.

  • Patent number: 8166823
Abstract: An ultrasonic probe apparatus for detecting flaws in a tubular includes a probe housing. The probe housing has an axial axis, a central cavity lying along the axial axis, and a bottom face adapted for placement on the tubular. The bottom face of the probe housing has an opening in the middle. A probe support is disposed within the central cavity and rotatable about the axial axis of the probe housing. An ultrasonic probe is mounted on the probe support and has a scanning face exposed to the opening of the bottom face of the probe housing, and may be coupled to the pipe with a liquid acoustic couplant medium.

  • Patent number: 5867275
Abstract: A test apparatus 10 for testing the diameter of oilfield tubulars having various nominal diameters includes a machine frame 12 for successively receiving the axially movable tubulars, and upper and lower radially opposing carriages 16 and 18 each movable relative to the machine frame. First and second light generating sources 24 and 26 are each mounted on a respective carriage and transmit a wide light beam directed to intersect radially opposing sides in the oilfield tubular, such that the width of each light beams is reduced by engagement with the tubular. First and second light detectors 28 and 30 are each mounted on the carriages and are positioned for detecting the position of the reduced width light beams relative to the carriages and generating test signals in response thereto. Computer 32 is provided for receiving test signals from the sensors and generating a tubular diameter test measurement in response thereto.

  • Patent number: 5656786
Abstract: A system 10 for elongate metal goods comprises automated tubular inspection equipment 12 within an inspection area 13 for initially inspecting goods, and particularly oilfield tubulars, and a monitor 32 within a prove-up area 30 for viewing inspection data. An inspection computer 16 electronically records the inspection data and cooperates with a prove-up computer 38 to verify that all flagged suspect tubulars have been tested. Prove-up data may be input to the prove-up computer either directly from test equipment 40 or through a keypad 36. The prove-up report generated by the computer 38 may be electronically transmitted in real time to a monitor 24 outside the prove-up area for viewing the prove-up report data. According to the method of the invention, the prove-up operator may display inspection data on the monitor 32 to facilitate the inspection of suspect tubulars within the prove-up area.
