  • Publication number: 20170192445
Abstract: A system that efficiently captures and utilizes the maximum generation capacity of an alternate energy source is disclosed. A first power converter is provided between the alternate energy source and a load. The first power converter is selected such that the capacity of the power converter is less than the generation capacity of the alternate energy source. A second power converter is selected such that the capacity of the second converter is at least equal to the difference between the capacity of the alternate energy source and the first power converter. A battery is provided to store the additional energy generated by the alternate energy source, and the second power converter is connected between the output of the alternate energy source and the battery. The power output from the first power converter is utilized to control operation of the second power converter.

  • Patent number: 9569483
Abstract: The present subject matter relates to a personalized weight management program incorporating dynamic feedback control using a validated mathematical model of metabolism and weight change. In general, the subject matter provides a system for repeated monitoring of one or more parameters such as, for example, body weight, physical activity, diet, eating behavior, or various other physiological and behavioral measurements, and using the parameter(s) to calculate an objective and personalized measure of adherence to a prescribed intervention, iteratively update mathematical model parameters, and adjust the prescribed intervention based on revised model predictions. Such a dynamic feedback control methodology can improve adherence to weight management interventions and result in greater weight loss and improved weight maintenance. The present subject matter also relates to a novel, cost-effective, weight management tool that could be widely disseminated through the internet and mobile computing platforms.

  • Patent number: 9093862
Abstract: The present invention provides a simplified method of controlling power among the various sources and loads in a power system. Power generating sources are each connected to a common DC bus through a converter. The converter selectively transfers energy to the DC bus at a maximum rate or at a reduced rate according to the level of the DC voltage present on the DC bus. At least one storage device is preferably connected to the common DC bus through a power regulator. The power regulator selectively transfers energy to or from the DC bus as a function of DC voltage level present on the DC bus. Further, an inverter may be provided to bidirectionally convert between the DC voltage and an AC voltage for connection to a customer load or the utility grid. Each power conversion device is independently controlled to provide a modular and simplified power control system.

  • Patent number: 8135286
Abstract: Methods of providing duplex free-space optical, communication comprising receiving a time-shift keying (TSK) encoded signal and selectively re-modulating—and optionally retro-reflecting —received TSK pulses so as to transmit an on-off keying (OOK) signal wherein modulation is achieved by operating a micro-opto-electronic mechanical system (MOEMS) device having a oscillation period, the difference in timing between logic 1 and logic 0 pulses of the TSK encoded signal being such that each pulse arrives at a time within a single MOEMS device oscillation period chosen to ensure high or low transmissivity through the MOEMS device independent of incident TSK encoded signal pulse value (0 or 1).

  • Publication number: 20110228895
Abstract: Optically diverse coded aperture imaging (CAI) includes imaging a scene which is multi-spectrally diverse or polarimetrically diverse. A CAI system allows light rays from a scene to pass to a detector array through a coded aperture mask within an optical stop. The mask has multiple apertures, and produces overlapping coded images of the scene on the detector array. Detector array pixels receive and sum intensity contributions from each coded image. The detector array provides output data for processing to reconstruct an image. The mask provides for multi-spectral information to become encoded in the data. A linear integral equation incorporating explicit wavelength dependence relates the imaged scene to the data. This equation is solved by Landweber iteration to derive a multi-spectral image. An image with multiple polarisation states (polarimetric diversity) may be derived similarly with a linear integral equation incorporating explicit polarisation dependence.
