  • Patent number: 6200689
Abstract: The present invention includes a method of repairing an annular metallic article and the repaired article itself which has an axially extending annular support and a projection generally radially extending therefrom. The projection has an associated operating radial height as measured from a radially facing annular first surface of the support and an associated shape. An upper portion of the projection is removed forming a stub extending away from the first surface and having a bonding surface at a stub end spaced apart from the first surface. A metallic material is metallurgically bonded to the bonding surface forming an annular heat affected zone in the stub bounded by the bonding surface. A first portion of the metallic material is removed to restore the projection to the operating height and shape. At least one annular outer surface of the tooth extending over at least a portion of the heat affected zone is laser shock peened, preferably after the first portion of the metallic material is removed.

  • Patent number: 6014263
Abstract: A method for preventing clouding of a lens employed in a high-temperature oxidizing environment, an example of which is a lens of a pyrometer used to sense exhaust gas temperature (EGT) of a gas turbine engine. Clouding is prevented by inhibiting the generation of volatile oxide species that react with high-temperature lens materials, forming deposits including oxides of chromium, molybdenum and other elements having volatile oxide species. The method is particularly directed to a pyrometer whose lens is formed of sapphire (alumina) or silica, and is mounted within a structure formed of a material containing chromium and/or molybdenum, such as a superalloy or stainless steel. The method entails forming an alumina scale-forming barrier coating such as a diffusion aluminide on surfaces of the structure that are subject to oxidation and high temperatures.

  • Patent number: 5843586
Abstract: A single-crystal article having a thermal barrier coating on a surface thereof, and a method for processing the article so as to promote the life of the coating. As a result of its single-crystal microstructure, the article is characterized by having been unidirectionally solidified along a primary crystallographic direction, and secondary crystallographic directions that are normal to the primary crystallographic direction. Improved spallation resistance of the coating is achieved by selectively orienting the secondary crystallographic direction with respect to a direction normal to a life-limiting surface region of the thermal barrier coating.

  • Patent number: 5332360
Abstract: A gas turbine engine stator vane includes a groove extending laterally in an outer surface at one end thereof between leading and trailing edges for receiving a brazing material. The vane may be joined to an arcuate band having a complementary groove extending colinearly with the airfoil groove to collectively define therebetween an enlarged crevice for receiving the brazing material to form a reinforcing pin therein.

  • Patent number: 5304039
Abstract: An extension is provided on an end of an article having a directionally oriented microstructure by using the article end as a growth seed in a molten material compatible with material from which the article end is made. The extension is directionally solidified as integral with and as an extension of the article end and with a microstructure compatible with that of the article end.

  • Patent number: 5291937
Abstract: An extension is provided on an end of an article having internal passageways and having a directionally oriented microstructure by using the article end as a growth seed in a molten material compatible with material from which the article end is made. The extension is directionally solidified as integral with and as an extension of the article end and with a microstructure compatible with that of the article end.
