  • Patent number: 11496231
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to detect blank images in a digital video broadcast signal are disclosed. An example method of detecting a blank image includes receiving a compressed digital image including a plurality of DC values, analyzing a total number of bits in the digital image to determine if the digital image has a data size small enough to be a blank frame candidate, if the data size is small enough for the digital image to be a blank frame candidate, analyzing multiple areas of the digital image to determine if the multiple areas exhibit substantially a same complexity, if the multiple areas exhibit substantially the same complexity, determining a number of DC values in the plurality of DC values that meet a criterion, comparing the determined number of DC values meeting the criterion to a threshold, and identifying the received digital image as a blank image if the determined number of DC values exceeds the threshold.

  • Patent number: 9326034
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to collect audience information associated with a media presentation are described herein. An example method includes detecting, at a base meter located in proximity to a media presentation device, registration information from a portable metering device within proximity of the base meter, the registration information identifying a user associated with the portable metering device. A content identifier associated with media presented by the media presentation device is determined. A polling query is sent to the portable metering device for presentation to the user. A response to the polling query, the registration information, and the content identifier are communicated to a data collection facility.

  • Patent number: 8819717
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting a channel change event are disclosed. An example method identifying at least one of a first muted audio condition or a first transient audio condition in a second portion of a media signal having first, second, and third portions, the first portion occurring earlier in time than the second portion and the second portion occurring earlier in time than the third portion, and identifying, using a processor, a channel change event in response to: 1) identifying the at least one of the first muted audio condition or the first transient audio condition; 2) failing to identify a second muted audio condition or a second transient audio condition in the first and third portions of the media signal; and 3) determining that a time domain length of the second portion of the media signal is greater than a first threshold and less than a second threshold.

  • Patent number: 8555304
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to collect audience information associated with a media presentation are described herein. In an example method includes counting a first number of individuals proximate to a media presentation device, counting a second number of signals received from one or more portable devices, each of which is associated with a respective one of one or more monitored individuals, comparing the first number of individuals to the second number of signals, and determining a third number of unidentified ones of the individuals proximate to the media presentation device based on the comparison of the first number of individuals to the second number of signals.

  • Patent number: 7765564
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting a channel change event are disclosed. The disclosed methods and apparatus detect a channel change event by monitoring an audio signal of an information presentation device such as a television system. The monitored audio signal is tested for certain characteristics indicative of a channel change event. In some information presentation devices, changing channels produces an audible “pop” sound. In other information presentation devices, the “pop” sound produced by changing channels is muted by the information presentation device. Once a channel change event is detected, an audience measurement system may automatically determine what program is on the information presentation device. Alternatively, an audience member may be prompted to manually enter what program is on the information presentation device.
