  • Patent number: 5873599
Abstract: An apparatus (40) for pretensioning seat belt webbing (16) which is extensible about an occupant of a vehicle seat (14) has at least two different output levels. Sensors (110, 120, 130) sense at least one characteristic of the occupant of the vehicle seat (14). A controller (100) is operatively connected to the sensors (110, 120, 130) for controlling the output level of the pretensioning apparatus (40) based on the characteristics of the occupant sensed by the sensors. The at least two output levels of the pretensioning apparatus (40) correspond to respective levels of force applied to the seat belt webbing (16) which in turn correspond to respective levels of force imposed on the vehicle occupant by the seat belt webbing.

  • Patent number: 5871236
Abstract: An apparatus (40) for pretensioning seat belt webbing (16) which is extensible about an occupant of a vehicle seat (14) includes a housing (70) having a fluid chamber (90) and an actuatable pyrotechnic device (150) in fluid communication with the fluid chamber. An actuatable venting mechanism, such as a pyrotechnic plug (160), when actuated, opens a vent opening (96) to enable venting of fluid from the fluid chamber (90). A controller (190) is operatively connected to the pyrotechnic device (150) and to the venting mechanism (160) for controlling the actuation of the pyrotechnic device and of the venting mechanism. The controller (190) actuates only the pyrotechnic device (150) to provide a first pretensioning output level and, alternatively, actuates both the pyrotechnic device (150) and the venting mechanism (160) to provide a second pretensioning output level.

  • Patent number: 5606783
Abstract: A seat belt buckle (24) includes a base (80) that defines a cavity (82) for receiving a pair of tongues (62, 64). A latch plate (100) is supported by the base (80) and is movable between a first position connecting the tongues (62, 64) with the base when the tongues are advanced a fully inserted distance into the cavity (82) and a second position at which the tongues are disconnected from the base. A blocking mechanism (200) has a portion located in a path of movement (P1, P2) of one of the tongues (62, 64). The blocking mechanism (200) is operable to block advancement of the tongues (62, 64) the fully inserted distance into the cavity (82) until both tongues are advanced into the cavity together a predetermined distance. The blocking mechanism (200) comprises a member (204) that is linear moveable relative to the base (80). A pivotable arm (206) carried by the member (204) has opposite end portions (266, 264) which engage the tongues (62, 64).

  • Patent number: 5267377
Abstract: A buckle assembly (36) includes a latch member (50) which is movable between an engaged position and a release position. A pushbutton (88) is manually actuatable from a first position to a second position to move the latch member from the engaged position to the release position. The latch member is movable from the engaged position to the release position against force provided by only a latch spring (64) upon insertion of a tongue (38, 40) into the buckle assembly. The pushbutton is manually actuatable from the first position to the second position against a combined force provided by the latch spring and a coil spring (92). A one-piece plastic locator member (112) is mounted on a base (44) of the buckle assembly. The locator member extends into a belt receiving opening (46) in the base to protect the belt (32) against abrasion by the metal base.

  • Patent number: 5220713
Abstract: An improved apparatus for interconnecting safety belts includes a buckle member which receives a tongue member to interconnect the safety belts. An indicator and ejector assembly has a visually readable indicia which changes from red to green as the tongue and buckle members are interconnected. As the tongue and buckle members are disconnected, the indicia changes from green back to red. The indicia is disposed on an indicator member which transmits force to eject the tongue member at least partially from the buckle member as the tongue and buckle members are disconnected.
