  • Patent number: 5755793
Abstract: A centralizer 10 for positioning against a prosthetic implant 1. The centralizer 10 includes a plurality of inner raised ribs 15 extending from the inner surface 13 of the centralizer 10. The inner ribs 15 provide inner recessed pathways 16 which extend from the distal edge 12 toward the proximal edge 11. The centralizer 10 also may include a plurality of outer raised ribs 17. The inner and outer ribs 15 and 17 space the centralizer 10 from the implant 1 and the bone 5. This allows bone cement to flow into the gaps created between centralizer and the implant and between the centralizer and the bone.

  • Patent number: 5613970
Abstract: The invention is directed to an orthopaedic instrumentation assembly 10 located relative to an intramedullary member 12, wherein the intramedullary member is disposed at least partially within a bone. The instrumentation assembly 10 includes an offset bushing 16 having a longitudinal axis and a bore therethrough for receiving the intramedullary member. The bore is disposed non-coaxially relative to the longitudinal axis. A sizing plate 14 has an opening 22 therein, and further includes a portion associated with the opening for receiving the bushing, wherein the bushing is rotatably supported. Upon movement of the bushing 16 or sizing plate 14, the bushing and sizing plate coact to position the sizing plate relative to each of the intramedullary member and the bone.

  • Patent number: 5549686
Abstract: A knee joint prosthesis includes femoral and tibial components. The femoral component has a cam located near the upper extreme of the posterior condyles and substantially flush with the inside surface of the posterior condyles. The prosthesis is characterized by low cam and spine contact which reduces the stress on the components and improves their subluxation resistance. The tibial component has a posteriorly located spine to engage the femoral cam and a relief groove to accommodate the femoral cam. This allows the cam to remain low on the tibial spine and even go below the edges of the tibial component. Cam chamfers, where the femoral cam attaches to the posterior condyles of the femoral component, further facilitate cam clearance. The cam chamfers and relief groove cooperate in flexion to allow at least 12 degrees of rotation, both clockwise and counterclockwise, of the femoral component with respect to the tibial component around the axis of the spine.

  • Patent number: 5181925
Abstract: A femoral component for a knee joint prosthesis having a modular cam which may be connected intraoperatively to provide posterior tibial subluxation resistance when the posterior cruciate ligament is sacrificed. The cam includes protrusions which engage with notches on the stem base to prevent rotation of the cam during use. A stem extension is connected to the stem base for clamping engagement of the cam body therebetween. A transverse opening may be formed in the stem base for providing access to the stem extension threads. The threads may then be malformed to prevent rotation of the stem extension relative to the extension.

  • Patent number: 5057108
Abstract: A surface treatment process for stainless steel orthopedic implant devices and an orthopedic implant device surface treated in accordance with the disclosed process are disclosed. A rough ground or machined stainless steel part is shot blasted with stainless steel shot. The device is then shot blasted with glass beads having a nominal size of between one-tenth and one-half that of the stainless steel shot. Electropolishing and passivation follow the shot blasting steps. A part thus treated includes a heavily cold-worked outer layer that enhances the fatigue properties of the stainless steel orthopedic implant device.

  • Patent number: 4969889
Abstract: An instrument for locating a hole of an intramedullary nail includes an end with a sleeve to carry a pin. The sleeve is substantially translucent when subjected to x-ray visualization and the pin is opaque so that the pin can be aligned with the hole of the intramedullary nail.
