  • Patent number: 6847295
Abstract: An anti-abduction system and method is disclosed which utilizes a radio frequency transceiver attached to a slave to communicate with a corresponding master transceiver to detect and prevent abductions, which may be advantageously applied to situations in which child abduction is a possibility. The disclosed system and method utilizes communication protocols to notify the master of the proximal locality of the slave unit and any spatial deviation of the slave from the master. Utilization of varying strength transceiver signaling between the master and slave permits the distance between the master and slave to be approximated. Additionally, the slave may contain an optional heartbeat monitor to detect and report situations in which the device is removed from the potential abduction victim.

  • Publication number: 20040177313
Abstract: A digital signal processor capable of performing a Viterbi algorithm is provided. The digital signal processor includes an instruction fetching unit that fetches instructions, a decoding unit that decodes the instructions fetched by the instruction fetching unit; and an execution unit that executes the instructions decoded by the decoding unit. The execution unit includes an arithmetic logic unit configured to perform a register-register arithmetic logic operation. The arithmetic logic unit compares a first data with a second data, in parallel with a comparison of a third data with a fourth data. The first data, the second data, the third data, and the fourth data can each be one of four results obtained by adding one of two path metrics to one of two branch metrics. The execution unit outputs new path metrics.

  • Patent number: 6786157
Abstract: A shaped charge explosive device (10) comprising an explosive charge body including an explosive charge (18) defining a cavity particulate material (44) dispersible by the explosive charge when detonated, eg in a liner lining the cavity. In a preferred embodiment of this device of particular applicability to use in avalanche control, the particulate medium is aluminium. This is energized by the liner collapse and jetting process such that on impact and interaction with a snow/ice target it gererates a directed blast effect extending beyond that achievable with a simple blast charge of the same mass. Direct application to hand charge avalanche control methods and modified ammunition for Avalauncher ammunition are presented. Two of such charges with a conical liner can be positioned either facing each other or facing away form each other to obtain a particular blast pattern.

  • Publication number: 20040028947
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a corrosion resistant ferromagnetic alloy suitable for use as write pole material in on a magnetic media recording head, as well as to magnetic media heads containing the corrosion resistant alloy. The corrosion resistant film generally includes a rhodium-containing alloy, most typically a cobalt iron rhodium alloy. The invention is further directed to methods of forming the alloy and applying it to substrates, such as magnetic media recording heads. The corrosion resistant alloy provides significant corrosion resistance while simultaneously maintaining a high magnetic moment (Bs), which facilitates high density read and write functions.

  • Publication number: 20030200861
Abstract: An armor system useful, for example, as a shroud, comprising a first pliable, cut resistant fibrous layer and a second pliable fibrous layer is disclosed. The first layer is arranged to receive an impact from a large projectile prior to the second layer and engages the projectile to slow its velocity. The second layer is substantially coextensive with the first and dissipates the incoming energy of the impact to resist complete penetration of the second layer by the projectile, preferably by deforming in response to the impact. Both layers comprise fibers having a tensile modulus of at least about 200 g/d, and an energy-to-break of at least about 8 J/g and a tenacity equal to or greater than about 10 g/d. In another embodiment, the layers are reversed relative to the impact face of the system so that the second layer becomes the first layer and is resistant to projectiles impacting the system, while the first layer becomes the second layer and resists deformation of the system by projectile impacts.

  • Publication number: 20030187853
Abstract: A distributed data storage system and method comprising a highly integrated mass storage controller system permitting distributed management and control of data storage is disclosed. The present invention in some preferred embodiments permits mass storage media to be made available on a network in a fashion to permit global access, while automatically handling many high-level file access and data integrity/security/control functions normally associated with a host operating system. This integration and redistribution of functionality permits spatial diversification of data resources, automatic mirroring of data, fault isolation, data security, and a plethora of other control functions to be integrated into the mass storage device. This integration permits peer-to-peer communication between mass storage devices to both unburden the host data consumers but also isolate the data management functions from the data presentation functions normally associated with host systems.

  • Patent number: 6589925
Abstract: A detergent tablet in order to be readily dispensed from the detergent dispenser of an automatic dishwasher should be of a generally elliptical shape to a modified generally elliptical shape. This is a shape where a cylinder having a rectangular cross-section contained within the tablet shape has a diagonal dimension that is a minimum for such a shape. This is a diagonal of a cross-section along the minor axis of the tablet. This shape can be defined by the equation: ( x a ) p + ( y b ) p = 1 where 2a is the length of the major axis, 2b is the length of the minor axis, and p in an exponent having a value of between about 1.5 to about 25 extending to a shape where the sides disposed along the major axis are parallel and the sides defined by the minor axis have a defined radius.

  • Publication number: 20030126059
Abstract: An intellectual property (IP) brokering system and method (0110) incorporating an expert system permitting a customer (0120) to automate and optimize the use of IP agents (0130) to affect customer product realization (0140) is disclosed. The present invention in some preferred embodiments permits a customer to define a knowledge database with background and customer sensitivities as well as a requirements database for a given product to be created. This information is then mapped to available technical resources and design architectures by the expert system that then generates an optimized execution plan based on available resources. The disclosed invention permits global optimization of the customer requirements by coordinating disparate IP agents in a unified fashion to achieve an optimal utility function with respect to the desired customer product.
