  • Patent number: 7335853
Abstract: A method for the orbital welding of tubular elements held in abutment comprising the steps of striking an arc at a strike point with an orbital welder between an electrode and a seam formed by a first tubular element and a second tubular element, held in abutment within a fixture; initiating an orbit of said electrode around an abutment of said first tubular element and said second tubular element; adjusting the current of said arc in a pulsed manner from a maximum current to a minimum current at a set frequency, combination of said maximum current and said minimum current forming an average current; decreasing said average current in a generally continuous manner as said orbit of said electrode progresses from said strike point, the rate of decrease of said maximum current having a generally inverse relationship to the rate of increase in temperature experienced by said tubular elements.

  • Publication number: 20070125143
Abstract: The present invention provides a bending machine for strip, webbing, or rod material comprising: an electronic control means; two cylinders, each acting selectively as a forming mandrel or a forming tool; an angular displacement means, controlling the orbit of the forming mandrel; and a feeding means, controlling the rate of material advancement; wherein a curvilinear profile of varying radii is formed in at least a portion of a material by varying the feed rate and the angular displacement, individually or in conjunction.

  • Publication number: 20070038409
Abstract: A position sensing device to locate a point in three-dimensional space relative to an origin is provided. The invention generally is comprised of a housing, a rigid extension with a fixed terminus protruding from the housing, a position sensing means fixed to the housing, a logic circuit responsive to the position sensing means, and a processor responsive to the logic circuit. The logic circuit and processor may be located externally from the housing. Wherein the fixed terminus can be collocated with an origin and thereafter collocated with a point in space away from the origin, the vector formed between the two points being accurately measured by the position sensing device.

  • Publication number: 20060157535
Abstract: A purge gas introduction system for an orbital tube welding setup is provided, configured to inject high purity inert purge gas to the interior volume of a tube or tubular component. An o-ring is interposed between an annular base and an annular ring, their junction forming an annular o-ring groove, each part forming one sidewall, with the o-ring fully recessed within the groove, protecting the o-ring during the insertion and removal of a tube. The annular base and an annular ring are configured to receive a tube terminus. The sidewalls of the o-ring groove are divergent one to the other, wherein as the annular ring is drawn towards the annular base, the o-ring is forced partially out of the groove, forming a substantially leak tight seal between the tube and the o-ring. A purge gas from an external source is transmitted to the annular base through a purge connector, then, in turn, introduced to the interior volume of the tube.

  • Publication number: 20060118526
Abstract: A weld bead geometry control system is provided for use in welding in abutment tubes or tubular components. The present invention can accurately and quickly correct for changes in purge gas pressure due to flow losses in real-time, to prevent any undesired protrusion or concavity of a molten weld bead, while allowing complete penetration of the weld. The present invention can additionally dynamically adjust the internal purge pressure to counteract the effects of gravitational pull on the molten weld bead. The weld bead geometry control system can in act in concert with existing orbital welding systems to consistently produce high quality and fully penetrated weld beads that meet or exceed industry standards.

  • Publication number: 20050210819
Abstract: A sinusoidal structural member having a dual component flange is provided. In the preferred embodiment, the flange (both upper and lower) is comprised of at least two components. These two components can be produced by dividing the flange lengthwise; where the division plane is substantially parallel to the plane of the web, when observing a standard flange-web relationship; and the geometry of the division border substantially matches the sinusoidal geometry of the web. The two resulting flange components substantially complement one another; wherein the sine peak of one component fits within the sine valley of its corresponding component, leaving a gap sufficient to accommodate the thickness of the web to be interposed. The sinusoidal web, substantially matching the division pattern of the flange components, is compressively sandwiched between the flange components, with sufficient compression to bring the sinusoidal web within dimensional compliance.

  • Publication number: 20050017120
Abstract: A roll forming machine capable of forming the corrugated metal web of a sinusoidal structural member is provided. The preferred embodiment includes a material feeding means, a material guiding means, and at least two forming cylinders. The material feeding means receives a sheet of material, and is in material communication with the material guiding means. The material guiding means receives the sheet of material, guiding the sheet of material into the forming cylinders and preventing significant movement or buckling of the sheet of material. The forming cylinders are a set of at least two substantially aligned and parallel cylinders, having a separation between sufficient to receive the sheet of material. The forming cylinders can alternately orbit one around the other, one forming cylinder axis being held substantially stationary while the other forming cylinder orbits the stationary cylinder, bending the sheet of material and forming the desired web geometry.
