    Abstract: A catheter assembly configured for use with a medical device is provided herein. The catheter assembly can comprise a catheter hub having an interior chamber and a valve located in the interior chamber. The valve can comprise a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a sidewall extending therebetween to define a valve interior. The valve can include a barrier layer having a concave shape that extends in the valve interior from the sidewall at the distal portion. The barrier layer can have at least one slit extending therethrough that is in a normally closed configuration to prevent a fluid from passing through the barrier layer. The catheter assembly can further comprise a sealing ring located circumferentially at a distal end of the valve distally to the barrier layer. The sealing ring can form a seal between the valve and the interior chamber at the distal end.

    Abstract: A protein must fold into a specific conformation in order to carry out its intended function. Failure to fold correctly may lead to self-association and aggregation, and formation of a highly ordered and insoluble form of protein—the amyloid fibril. Amyloid fibrils are associated with a growing number of human diseases and are thus of significant medical interest. Current interest in amyloid has also grown within the wider protein science research community, based on the discovery that these unusual structures are likely to represent a generic form of all proteins. The invention provides amyloid fibrils, for novel biomaterials development, from a heterogeneous protein mixture. In particular it provides a protein derived as a secondary product from an industrial production process (wheat gluten) to make amyloid fibrils for novel biomaterials.

    Abstract: A winding accumulator system for controlling the storage of filamentary material between a source of such material and a winding receptacle, utilizing: a plurality of serially interconnected accumulator units for storing filamentary material with the first accumulator unit receiving filamentary material from the source and storing a given amount of filamentary material and each succeeding accumulator unit storing double the amount of filamentary material stored by a preceding accumulator unit; varying the movement of the filamentary material between the accumulator units; and controlling the movement varying device to limit the change in tension of the filamentary material with changes in the acceleration or deceleration of the filamentary material caused by a change in the input or output of filamentary material to or from the accumulator system.
